The seal and burst test values of identical packages produced on a specified validated production packaging line are useful data for performance specifications. The standardized methods of the American Society for Testing of Materials (ASTM) may be used.

In the case of alloys used in electric heaters the useful life of an alloy is determined (American Society for Testing of Materials, ASTM, B76) by electrically heating a section of wire in air to a given temperature where it is held for two minutes followed by two minutes of cooling. This cycle is repeated until a 10% increase in electrical resistivity is noted and the time is reported as the useful life of the alloy. 

As with all materials that have been recently developed, the health risks associated with SiC whiskers are not well known however, because their sizes and shapes are similar to that of asbestos, therefore they are considered hazardous. Airborne dispersion and subsequent inhalation are the most serious health hazards. However, with proper worl lace handling requirements and procedures, large quantities of SiC whiskers can be safely processed. No release of whiskers has been observed from dense ceramic matrix composites during fracture or wear processes. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are packaged with all products containing loose whiskers and the directions in the data sheets should be followed. At the present time, the American Society for Testing of Materials (ASTM) has developed procedures and handling practice standards for SiC whiskers [14]. 

Apparatus for carrying out these measurements are discussed in Table 5.1. The ATS FAAR teraohmmeter model M 150 E or equivalent is suitable for carrying out these measurements according to American Society for Testing of Materials (ASTM) D1401-02 [1], DIN lEC 60093 [2], and DIN lEC 60167 [3]. 

The disk surface is thus exposed only to gaseous SO, not particulates. The American Society for Testing of Materials (ASTM) procedure suggests a 30-day exposure, followed by a standard sulfate analysis [16]. The other method sometimes used is the peroxide candle, similar in its function to the chloride candle, but again using lead peroxide to capture SOy In this procedure, a lead peroxide paste is applied to a paper thimble in the laboratory, and allowed to dry thoroughly before exposure. The thimble is then exposed in an instrument shelter to the test yard environment. In both cases, the SOj deposited results are appropriately reported in terms of deposition rate on the surface in units of mg/m /day. 

ASTM D696 n An American Society for Testing of Materials (ASTM) standard test method for the measurement of the coefficient of linear thermal expansion of plastics by using a vitreous silica ddatometer. The test is carried out under conditions excluding any significant creep or elastic strain rate and effects of moisture, curing, loss of plasticizer, etc. The specimen is placed at the bottom of the outer dilatometer tube and the tube is immersed in a liquid bath at a desired temperature. 

ASTM D785 n An American Society for Testing of Materials (ASTM) standard test method for determination of indentation hardness of plastics by a Rockwell tester. The hardness number is derived from the net increase in the depth of impression as the load on a ball indenter is increased from a fixed minor load (10 kg) to a major load and then returned to the minor load. This number consists of the number of scale divisions (each corresponding to 0.002 mm vertical movement of the indentor) and scale symbol. Rockwell scales, designated by a single capital letter of English alphabet, vary depending on the diameter of the indentor and the major load.
