Several national organizations serve the professional needs of U.S. pharmacists. These reflect the practice milieu of members, eg, independent community pharmacies, chain dmg stores, and hospitals. The American Pharmaceutical Association (APhA), founded in 1852, is composed of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science, Academy of Pharmaceutical Practice and Management, and the Academy of Students of Pharmacy. As a recent study found (Cosgrove et al., 2006), even the development of official psychiatric diagnoses takes place under the sway of the pharmaceutical industry. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM American Psychiatric Association, 1994, 2000) provides the official diagnoses for use in clinical practice, insurance company reimbursements, basic research, and the FDA approval of drugs. Nearly all the diagnoses are used for justifying the prescription of medications. Of the 170 panel members who contributed to the two most recent editions of the manual, 56% had one or more associations with the pharmaceutical industry. [Pg.378]

International Pharmaceutical Abstracts, available electronically from 1970, from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, may only index around 800 journal titles but, as its name suggests, it specializes in pharmacy literature from around the world. A study by Bonnie Snow found that 12% of IPA s journals were not covered by MEDLINE, EMBASE, BIOSIS Previews, or Chemical Abstracts. IPA has also indexed ASHP meetings since 1988, meetings of the American Association of College Pharmacists and the American Pharmacy Association. All records have abstracts. [Pg.1386]

There are now a number of journals devoted to medical statistics. Statistics in Medicine was founded in 1981 and has grown rapidly to have 24 issues and over 4000 pages a year. Statistical Methods in Medical Research is a general review journal founded in 1992 The Journal of Biopharmaceutical Statistics is specifically devoted to statistical issues in drug development and was started in 1991. New journals since the year 2000 include Biostatistics (2000), Pharmaceutical Statistics (2002) and Statistics in Biopharmaceutical Research (2007). Other journals of relevance that often have a strong statistical content are Contemporary Clinical Trials, Clinical Trials, The Journal of Clinical Epidemiology and the Drug Information Journal and, of course, many older statistical journals such as Biometrics, Biometrika, The Journal of the Royal Statistical Society and the Journal of the American Statistical Association, have papers on medical statistics. [Pg.24]
