Alumina engineering properties

Aluminum oxide (alumina), AI2O3, has lugh technological value. Sol-gel processing of alumina has created novel applications and improved some of its properties. Products such as catalyst earners, abrasives, fibers, films for electronic applications, aerogels, and membranes for molecular filtration have been developed based on sol-gel processing. The best known use for a 95% alumina ceramic is in spark plugs, mass-produced components which illustrate well the need for a combination of good thermomechanical and electrical properties. They must be strong to withstand not only rough treatment meted out by garage mechanics but also the thermomechanical shocks experienced each time the engine fires, with... [Pg.284]

Pines had done much work on properties of alumina and modifications thereof as catalysts - but that was chemistry, not chemical engineering. In justification, if for no other reason, I would like to ask how many chemical engineers in 1956 read the JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY Zero might be close. [Pg.70]

Development of nano-structured alumina and zirconia ceramics and composites as well as nano-structured calcium phosphate ceramics and porous bioactive glasses, possibly as composites with organic constituents, will provide desired properties for bone substitution and tissue engineering for the next 20 years (Chevalier and Gremillard, 2009). [Pg.450]

The extraordinary mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNT) have prompted intense research into a wide range of applications in structural materials, electronics, and chemical processing.Attempts have been made to develop advanced engineering materials with improved or novel properties through the incorporation of carbon nanotubes in selected matrices (polymers, metals and ceramics). But the use of carbon nanotubes to reinforce ceramic composites has not been very successful. So far, only modest improvements of properties were reported in CNTs reinforced silicon carbide and silicon nitride matrix composites, while a noticeable increase of the fracture toughness and of electrical conductivity has been achieved in CNTs reinforced alumina matrix composites. ... [Pg.259]

Air pollution, mainly contributed by the emission from automobiles, has become the most serious urban environmental problems in many eountries. In this study, so as to meet the SULEV regulation, the main idea has been focused on the utilization of HCA(Hydro-Carbon Adsorber) in order to adsorb the excess hydrocarbons emitted during the period of engine cold-start. As a main recipe of HCA materials, many types of zeolite as well as the combination of alumina, precious metals were used. In this study, physico-chemical factors of zeolite such as acidic properties and hydrophobic properties etc. has been characterized, and tried to find the optimum recipe of HCA materials. As results, among the acid properties of zeolites, the Si/Al ratio is found to be the most important factor to get higher hydro-carbon adsorption capacity. [Pg.328]
