As mentioned previously, the main body of research on whisker-reinforced composites was concerned with alumina, mullite, and silicon nitride matrix materials. None the less, selected work examined zirconia, cordierite, and spinel as matrix materials.16-18 The high temperature strength behavior reported for these composites is summarized in Table 2.5. As shown, the zirconia matrix composites exhibited decreases in room temperature strength with the addition of SiC whiskers. However, the retained strength at 1000°C, was significantly improved for the whisker composites over the monolithic. Claussen and co-workers attributed this behavior to loss of transformation toughening at elevated temperatures for the zirconia monolith, whereas the whisker-reinforcement contribution did not decrease at the higher temperature.17,18... [Pg.68]

This is probably due to the introduction of impurities from the whiskers similar to the effects observed with the silicon nitride matrix materials discussed above. [Pg.69]

The extraordinary mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNT) have prompted intense research into a wide range of applications in structural materials, electronics, and chemical processing.Attempts have been made to develop advanced engineering materials with improved or novel properties through the incorporation of carbon nanotubes in selected matrices (polymers, metals and ceramics). But the use of carbon nanotubes to reinforce ceramic composites has not been very successful. So far, only modest improvements of properties were reported in CNTs reinforced silicon carbide and silicon nitride matrix composites, while a noticeable increase of the fracture toughness and of electrical conductivity has been achieved in CNTs reinforced alumina matrix composites. ... [Pg.259]

The interest in development of SiC/Si3N4 composites stems from the fact that (a) SiC and Si3N4 are thermodynamically compatible and stable at temperatures to 1700°C, (b) silicon nitride processing temperature can be tailored to avoid fiber degradation, (c) silicon nitride matrix microstructure can be controlled to inprove composite properties such as matrix cracking strength and thermal conductivity. [Pg.150]

The pressureless sintering method commonly used for the fabrication of monolithic silicon nitride ceramics cannot be successfully adapted for the fabrication of SiC fiber reinforced silicon nitride matrix composites because of significant strength degradation of currently available fibers at the high temperatures requir l for sintering, and also because of the problems associated with retardation of densification of the matrix material by the... [Pg.150]

Addition of SiC particulates to a silicon nitride matrix is expected to improve the mechanical properties of silicon nitride. The flexural strength at 1400° C is considerably improved with the addition of 3 xm SiC particles to a silicon nitride matrix using MgO as a sintering aid [60]. [Pg.431]
