Hydro carbon

An important application of the critical solution temperature is to the determination of the water content in such substances as methyl and ethyl alcohols. Here the system is usually the alcohol and a hydro carbon, such as -hexane or dicyclohexyl the water is, of course, insoluble in the hydrocarbon. Thus, the methyl alcohol - cyclohexane system has a C.S.T. of 45 -5° and even 0 01 per cent, of water produces a rise of 0-15° in the C.S.T. The experimental details are given below. [Pg.20]

Hydrocarbons have, for the most part, replaced CFCs as propellants. Most personal products such as hair sprays, deodorants, and antiperspirants, as well as household aerosols, are formulated using hydrocarbons or some form of hydro-carbon—halocarbon blend. Blends provide customized vapor pressures and, if halocarbons are utilized, a decrease in flammabiUty. Some blends form azeotropes which have a constant vapor pressure and do not fractionate as the contents of the container are used. [Pg.347]

One of the most studied of the polyaromatic hydro-carbone (PAH) is benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), which is present in coal tar at coke oven plants. The BaP content of coal tar is between 0.1% and 1 % and it contributes to the serious potential health effects on employees exposed to coke oven emissions. The largest sources of BaP are open burning and home heating with wood and coal. The latter alone contributes 40 percent of all the BaP released each year in the USA. [Pg.251]

Figures 17 and 18 represent FT-IR transmission and RA spectra, respectively, of the alternating S(PS)9-Ba films at various temperatures from 0 ° to 120 °C [7], Two intense bands at 2919 and 2852 cm 1 are the antisymmetric and symmetric CH2 stretching bands of DOPC, and two bands at 2192 and 2088 cm 1 are the antisymmetric and symmetric CD2 stretching bands of St-d35, respectively. Apparently, all these bands decreases their intensities with the increase in temperature in Figure 17. At the same time, intensity differences of the respective bands are evident between the transmission and RA spectra. From these data, we calculated temperature dependence of the orientation angle y of the hydro-carbon chain axes of the constituent molecules in the alternating S(PS)9 and S(PS)9-Ba films using Eqs. (2) and (3). The results are shown in Figure 19 [7]. Apparently, the y values of the respective constituents in the S(PS)9-Ba film are much smaller than those of the corresponding molecules in the S(PS)9 film. This reveals that the barium salt molecules are more highly oriented as compared with the... For this purpose, in addition to the continuous evolution of CR and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), novel primary measures are under study, including the long route EGR to cool the recirculated exhaust gas, the use of premixed combustion [which implies, however, higher GO and unburned hydrocarbon (U HG) emissions], the reduction of the compression ratio, the shaping of the injection rate and so on. Still, the after-treatment catalytic technologies for O, removal and for CO/hydro-carbon (HG) and particulate matter (PM) reduction in passenger cars must be improved significantly. [Pg.394]

The corrosion resistance of SAN is similar to that of PS, but the cyano pendant groups can be hydrolyzed by hot adds or alkalis. SAN has a solubility parameter of about 10 H and is more resistant than PS to aliphatic hydro carbon liquids, such as those present in gasoline. [Pg.149]

The reversibility of the reaction was noted by D. Heercn and T. Schlosing,2 who found that the conversion of sodium chloride into the hydro-carbonate stops with a two-thirds or four-fifths conversion and J. A. Bradburn was able to reverse the reaction completely by blowing air through the mother liquid containing the sodium hydrocarbonate when the ammonium carbonate formed by the action of ammonium chloride on sodium hydrocarbonate was carried away in a stream of air. An excess of ammonium hydrocarbonate is required to counteract the reversal of the reaction by the action of -the ammonium chloride on the sodium hydrocarbonate. E. Solvay stated that he was able to decompose the sodium chloride completely, but he later must have noticed that his yields fell short of this ideal state. [Pg.739]
