Because of the strong intermolecular bonds, cellulose does not melt and does not dissolve readily in ordinarily available solvents chemists have resorted to the derivatization of cellulose to render it soluble and processable. Specifically, the viscose process was developed. It converted cellulose into sodium cellulose xanthate, which was soluble in a caustic solution, making it possible to wet-spin the polymer into a fiber or film. This technique was accepted worldwide and has prospered. The process, however, consists of multiple steps and causes pollution. As a result, end users have looked for alternate methods of processing cellulose.

Eliminate extraneous materials for separation. The third option is to eliminate extraneous materials added to the process to carry out separation. The most obvious example would be addition of a solvent, either organic or aqueous. Also, acids or alkalis are sometimes used to precipitate other materials from solution. If these extraneous materials used for separation can be recycled with a high efficiency, there is not a major problem. Sometimes, however, they cannot. If this is the case, then waste is created by discharge of that material. To reduce this waste, alternative methods of separation are needed, such as use of evaporation instead of precipitation.

An alternative method of studying the molecular motions of a polymeric chain is to measure the complex permitivity of the sample, mounted as dielectric of a capacitor and subjected to a sinusoidal voltage, which produces polarization of the sample macromolecules. The storage and loss factor of the complex permitivity are related to the dipolar orientations and the corresponding motional processes. The application of the dielectric thermal analysis (DETA) is obviously limited to macromolecules possessing heteroatomic dipoles but, on the other hand, it allows a range of frequency measurement much wider than DMTA and its theoretical foundations are better established.

With the rapid increase in the nnmber of chemical industries, a great deal of waste-water is produced, which causes pollution and degrades the enviromnent.
