Allergy prevalence

Allergy prevalence has increased over the past few decades,1 and there is accumulating evidence that botanicals may be useful for the associated symptoms.2 4 In order to commercialize a botanical dietary supplement to support clear nasal passages, we used an approach combining biological and clinical techniques. The European Allergy White Paper reports that the number of cases of atopic skin inflammation, one of the underlying allergic symptoms, increased by over 100% in the years 1960-1970. From the beginning of the 1980s to 1997, allergy prevalence increased two- to threefold in all European countries. At present, the problem concerns approximately 25%-30% of the European population (5%-8% of adults, 10%—15% of children) (European Allergy White Paper, 1997 Jahnz-Rozyk, 2007). [Pg.185]

There is no meaningflil correlation between laboratory corrosion tests and clinical performance, but high in vitro corrosion rates on several high nickel dental prosthetic alloys (163), together with the prevalence of allergy to nickel caused by plated jewelry, gives cause for caution. [Pg.485]

Food allergy is common in the general population and depending on the study its prevalence varies between 2 and 4% [15]. The rates are much higher if self-reported symptoms are accounted. Food allergy is more frequent in children than in adults... [Pg.13]

The most frequent elicitators of food allergy in children are peanuts and tree nuts [ 17]. In France the prevalence of food allergy has been estimated to be 3.2% [18]. Furthermore, in this study, food was identified as the most common cause of anaphylaxis. Here the major identified food allergens besides peanuts and tree nuts were shellfish, wheat and lupine flour [18]. [Pg.14]

In population-based studies from the USA, self-reported peanut allergy in children rose from 0.4% in 1997 to 0.8% in 2002 [21]. In the UK, prevalence rates for peanut allergy are in excess of 1%. Data from England points in the same direction with a twofold increase in reported peanut allergy. [Pg.15]

The prevalence of allergies fo specific foods is unknown for the most part. Good estimates exist of the prevalence of milk allergy in infancy (Hosf and Halken, 1990) and peanut and tree nut allergy throughout the life span (Sicherer et ah, 1999). However, the prevalence of allergies to seafoods including molluscan shellfish is not precisely known. [Pg.143]
