The 1981 razor clam fishery in Upper Cook Inlet increased substantially in both harvest and effort. Early that year the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC), coordinating with the National Shellfish Council, obtained certification of the Crescent River bar as an extension to the Polly Creek beach. [Pg.54]

The laboratory will store the containers with methanol-preserved soil at 2-6°C. The holding time for analysis is 14 days as defined by EPA Method 5035. ASTM Standard D 4547-98 indicates that methanol-preserved samples do not exhibit VOC losses for a period of time of up to two months (ASTM, 1998). The state of Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) Method AK101 for gasoline analysis of methanol-preserved soil samples specifies a holding time of 28 days (ADEC, 1999). [Pg.131]

Indoor and ambient air samples were measured from December 1992 to February 1993 by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (Gordian and Guay 1995). Concentration levels for methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), benzene, and formaldehyde were measured in ambient and indoor air samples. Blood samples were also taken from service station workers at the same time period. Blood samples from workers showed an increase of 300% in blood benzene concentrations after MTBE reformulated fuel was discontinued. Gasoline in Alaska has a benzene concentration of 5% (average U.S. national concentration is 1.5%). [Pg.143]

Few studies have examined the concentrations of 1,4-DCB in the northern environment. A literature search identified one report which demonstrated that 1,4-DCB can partition from air to ice and snow based on laboratory experiments, but no field data were reported [79]. The Fish Monitoring Program of the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation analyzed samples of 157 fish (caught in southeast Alaska, Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea, and... [Pg.163]

Kotzebue) for 1,4-DCB, among other substances. Chemists detected 1,4-DCB in 121 samples. The Department of Environmental Conservation concluded that these data represented a global presence of 1,4-DCB. Upon reviewing the data from the fish biomonitoring project, the Alaska Division of Public Health, Section of Epidemiology, concluded that the low levels detected did not present a public health concern [80]. Although intriguing, these data are too limited to draw conclusions about the possible transport of 1,4-DCB to the far North and its persistence there. [Pg.164]
