Air bag inflat

This completely automated spectrum analysis procedure represents the final element in our effort to reduce to routine practice the quantitative analysis of similarly constituted gaseous samples by FTIR. It has seen wide and successful application within our laboratory, having been the principle analytic method for two extensive hydrocarbon species-specific auto exhaust catalyst efficiency studies, a comprehensive study of the gases emitted by passive-restraint air bag inflators, several controlled furnace atmosphere analyses, several stationary source stack emission checks and several health-related ambient atmosphere checks.

An almost ideal protection would be a soft, fluffy pillow, providing a cushion against impact. Such a device, an air bag inflated only on impact, is now standard equipment for the protection of the driver and front-seat passenger. 

Perchlorate salts are potent oxidizers and are used in solid propellants for rockets and missiles, fireworks, road flares, matches, and auto air bag inflation systems. They are also found in Ghilean fertifizers, a wide variety of foods including vegetables and cows milk, prenatal vitamins, and as a result of natural processes (Dasgupta et ai, 2005). Thus, it appears likely that perchlorate is a naturally occurring anion and is probably ubiquitous.

An example of the use of the MADYMO model to simulate air bag inflation and occupant response to the frontal collision of an automobile is shown in Fig. 10.13. In this diagram, the response of a person wearing a shoulder and lap seat belt has been calculated at 25-ms time intervals following the initiation of air bag inflation. The forward rotation of the head is clearly visible and is arrested before it impacts the chest. Also, the flailing of the arms can be seen. 

Increasing use of UV-curable acrylates is found in the assembly of medical, automotive, electrical, electronic and optical devices. Dual cure mechanism (UV and anaerobic) adhesives are often used for the assembly of ammunition and automotive air bag inflators. 

A front-instaUed automotive air bag inflates and deflates in 0.04 seconds. A side bag must begin inflating in five milliseconds to protect a passenger effectively. 

Thus, we see that from a chemical standpoint, the products of an air bag inflation are rendered safe by a series of carefully designed reactions. However, most air bags are never inflated, which means that old cars sent to scrap yards stiU contain a small amount of very toxic and explosive sodium azide. This is a recycling or disposal problem that is yet to be resolved. 

The cover ( deployment door ) of the driver module was an S-RIM PUR moulding, incorporating a reinforcing nylon mesh and supported by an aramid fabric belt. The passenger module was similar but with a metal frame foamed into the cover. It was compatibilized into the dashboard with an aluminium sheet covered with PUR foam and ABS foil, which hinged open as the air bag inflated.

Ammonium perchlorate (AP) has apphcations in munitions, primarily as an oxidizer for solid rocket and missile propellants. It is also used as an air-bag inflator in the automotive industry, in fireworks, and is a contaminant in agricultural fertilizers. Because of these uses and ammonium perchlorate s high solubility, chemical stability, and persistence, it has become distributed widely in surface and ground water systems. There is little information about the effects of perchlorate in these systems or on the aquatic life that inhabits them. However, it is known that perchlorate is an endocrine disrupting chemical that interferes with normal thyroid function and that thyroid dysfunction impacts both growth and development in vertebrates.
