Thyroid dysfunction

Reversible hypothyroidism may occur in as many as 20% of the patients receiving lithium (Lindstedt et al. 1977 Myers et al. 1985). Lithium-induced hypothyroidism occurs more frequently in women. Thyroid function should be evaluated every 6-12 months during lithium treatment or if symptoms develop that might be attributable to thyroid dysfunction, including depression or rapid cycling. [Pg.143]

Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) should be ordered when thyroid dysfunction is suspected. Hypothyroidism may be responsible for constipation and related symptoms. [Pg.317]

Radioimmunotherapy is generally well tolerated. Toxicities include infusion-related reactions, myelosuppression, and possibly myelodysplastic syndrome or AML. 131I-tositumomab can cause thyroid dysfunction. [Pg.723]

Many chronic diseases can cause hypotension. Heart conditions (and drugs used for its treatment) can lead to bradycardia, thyroid dysfunction (either under- or over activity), diabetes mellitus, Parkinson s disease and neuropathies. Also, all acute conditions with the risk of dehydration, such as fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and bleeding, can cause hypotension. [Pg.72]

Cytokines Interferon- and interleukin-2 - Therapy with interferon- has been associated with the development of antithyroid microsomal antibodies in 20% of patients and some have transient hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, or both. Patients who have antithyroid antibodies before treatment are at higher risk of thyroid dysfunction during treatment. Interleukin-2 has been associated with transient painless thyroiditis in 20% of patients. [Pg.351]

Thyroid dysfunction Airway obstruction Delirium, confusion Myalgia/ myopathy... [Pg.277]

There is no discrete target tissue for thyroid hormones virtually every cell in the body is affected by thyroid hormones in some way. These hormones are intimately involved in the maintenance of normal function in virtually every cell type, including cellular responsiveness to other hormones, to the availability of metabolic substrates, to growth factors, and so on. Thyroid dysfunction can produce dramatic changes in the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids at the cellular level that can have repercussions for the operation of the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, reproductive, and nervous systems. Some of the clinical manifestations of thyroid dysfunction are presented next in the discussions of hypothyroid and hyperthyroid states. [Pg.746]
