Objectives and Aims

This chapter shows the connection between the one-electron orbital configuration of the elements and their positions in the Periodic Table and their characteristic or group oxidation numbers, their variable valances and their abilities to form ionic and covalent bonds in simple molecules. 

The first theoretical section is conceptually oriented. We shall discuss the special features occurring when more than one energy surface is involved in the chemical reaction (e.g., avoided and real crossings) as well as the general structure of the photochemical reaction path that connects the excited state reactant and the photoproducts through the funnel.

Although mentees may already have mentioned some of their problems, aims and objectives when detailing their expectations, these topics should be discussed in more detail. It might be the case that mentees are not yet clear about what aims they seek to achieve. Identifying these is, of course, an ongoing process, which does not only occur during the first meeting.

You should allocate some time at the start for library work (without neglecting benchwork), so that you can build up a database of references (p. 319). While photocopying can be expensive, you will find it valuable to have copies of key reviews and references handy when writing away from the library.
