The opinion of favourable effect of pozzolanic additions, particularly blastfurnace slag and siliceous fly ash against the srrlphate corrosion, is maintained to the present days and has the universal, rich documentation [251], However, some authors are of the opinion, that the physical effect of reduced porosity and capillary adsorption (permeability), in the case of high performance concrete with superplasticizers addition is more important than the influence of pozzolanic additions [252]. Hurst (19) discusses the similarity in action of the pyrethrins and of DDT as indicated by a dispersant action on the lipids of insect cuticle and internal tissue. He has developed an elaborate theory of contact insecticidal action but provides no experimental data. Hurst believes that the susceptibility to insecticides depends partially on the cuticular permeability, but more fundamentally on the effects on internal tissue receptors which control oxidative metabolism or oxidative enzyme systems. The access of pyrethrins to insects, for example, is facilitated by adsorption and storage in the lipophilic layers of the epicuticle. The epicuticle is to be regarded as a lipoprotein mosaic consisting of alternating patches of lipid and protein receptors which are sites of oxidase activity. Such a condition exists in both the hydrophilic type of cuticle found in larvae of Calliphora and Phormia and in the waxy cuticle of Tenebrio larvae. Hurst explains pyrethrinization as a preliminary narcosis or knockdown phase in which oxidase action is blocked by adsorption of the insecticide on the lipoprotein tissue components, followed by death when further dispersant action of the insecticide results in an irreversible increase in the phenoloxidase activity as a result of the displacement of protective lipids. This increase in phenoloxidase activity is accompanied by the accumulation of toxic quinoid metabolites in the blood and tissues—for example, O-quinones which would block substrate access to normal enzyme systems. The varying degrees of susceptibility shown by different insect species to an insecticide may be explainable not only in terms of differences in cuticle make-up but also as internal factors associated with the stability of oxidase systems. [Pg.49]

There are various methods for the determination of the surface area of solids based on the adsorption of a mono-, or polymolecular layer on the surface of the solid. These methods do not measure the particle diameter or projected area as such, but measure the available surface per gram or milliliter of powder. The surface measured is usually greater than that determined by permeability methods as the latter are effectively concerned with the fluid taking the path of least resistance thru the bed, whereas the adsorbate will penetrate thru the whole of the bed as well as pores in the powder particles. Surface diffusion has been extensively studied in literature. An overview of experimental data is given in Table 6.1. Okazaki, Tamon and Toei (1981), for example, measured the transport of propane through Vycor glass with a pore radius of 3.5 nm at 303 K and variable pressure (see Table 6.1). The corrected gas phase permeability was 0.69 m -m/m -h-bar, while the surface permeability was 0.55 m -m/m -h-bar, and so almost as large as the gas phase permeability (Table 6.1). It is clear from Table 6.1, that the effects of surface diffusion, especially at moderate temperatures, can be pronounced. An improved adsorption of DNA bases has been observed at a chemically modified electrode based on a Nafion/ruthenium oxide pyrochlore (Pb2Ru2-x FhxOj-y modified GC (CME). Nafion is a polyanionic perfiuorosulfonated ionomer with selective permeability due to accumulation of large hydrophobic cations rather than small hydrophilic ones. The Nafion coating was demonstrated to improve the accumulation of DNA bases, while the ruthenium oxide pyrochlore proved to have electrocatalytic effects towards the oxidation of G and A. The inherent catalytic activity of the CME results from the Nafion-bound oxide surface being hydrated. The catalytically active centers are the hydrated surface-boimd oxy-metal groups which act as binding centers for substrates [50]. [Pg.18]

Research on the various biochemical systems affected by tumor promoters, in particular TPA, has been recently reviewed by Diamond et al. (54) and Werner and coworkers (55) have reviewed the early effects of phorbol esters on the membranes of cultured cells. The latter group reports that TPA causes permeability changes in 3T3 cell membranes and experimental evidence is cited that phorbol esters interact specifically with a membrane-specific macromolecule rather than passive adsorption by the membrane lipid matrix.
