Next, the German Adolph Eick (1829-1901), stimulated by Graham s researches, sought to turn diffusion into a properly quantitative concept and formulated the law named after him, relating the rate of diflfusion to the steepness of the concentration gradient (Eick 1855), and confirmed his law by measurements of diflfusion in liquids. In a critical examination of the influence of this celebrated piece of theory, Tyrrell... [Pg.166]

Adolph Baeyer is credited with the first recognition of the general nature of the reaction between phenols and aldehydes in 1872 ([2,5-7] [18], Table 5.1). He reported formation of colorless resins when acidic solutions of pyrogallic acid or resorcinol were mixed with oil of bitter almonds, which consists primarily benzaldehyde. Baeyer also saw resin formation with acidic and basic solutions of phenol and acetaldehyde or chloral. Michael and Comey furthered Baeyer s work with additional studies on the behavior of benzaldehyde and phenols [2,19]. They studied a variety of acidic and basic catalysts and noted that reaction vigor followed the acid or base strength of the catalyst. Michael et al. also reported rapid oxidation and darkening of phenolic resins when catalyzed by alkaline materials. [Pg.870]

Tn their years together Hahn and Meitner did significant research on beta- and gamma-ray spectra. They discovered the new element protoactinium-91 and, at Meitner s suggestion, took up, and made great progress with, work on neutron bombardment of nuclei that Enrico Fermi had commenced in Rome. In 1938, this research was suspended when Adolph Hitler annexed Austria and Meitner had to flee Germany. [Pg.791]

Some indication of the differences can be found by analysing some criticisms. .. upon the periodic classification solicited in 1881 by the editor of the Chemical News from Adolphe Wurtz, a celebrated Parisian chemist of the time. (Wurtz s note follows notes from Mendeleev and from Lothar Meyer forming their famous priority dispute.)... [Pg.86]
