Tn their years together Hahn and Meitner did significant research on beta- and gamma-ray spectra. They discovered the new element protoactinium-91 and, at Meitner s suggestion, took up, and made great progress with, work on neutron bombardment of nuclei that Enrico Fermi had commenced in Rome. In 1938, this research was suspended when Adolph Hitler annexed Austria and Meitner had to flee Germany. [Pg.791]

Because this is a difficult teaching— strong meat, as opposed to milk for babes —and a pitfall that may lead readers into the blind alley of a self-righteous and moral judgment, let us further impart here that there is no evil action—seen on television news or read in the newspaper—that any of us has not performed in some incarnation, in our round of lives. Each and every human being has the innate potential to become either a Hitler or a Buddha. Moreover, even the soul that once incarnated as Adolph Hitler in the 20th century will one day become a realized Buddha, for ultimate perfection is assured. Omnipotence cannot fail and God shall be all in all. [Pg.159]

In the 1930s Adolph Hitler combined these companies into a cartel called 1 G Farben (Farben means colors) that rapidly dominated prewar chemical production and then produced Germany s chemicals, munitions, and synthetic fuels during World War 11. After the War, in an effort to control the power of this conglomerate, the Allies spht 1 G Farben into three separate companies BASF, Bayer, and Hoechst, which specialized in commodity chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and fine chemicals, respectively. Other historians have argued that because Adolph Hitler had been a gas casualty in World War I, he was personally opposed to the use of gas weapons in World War II. Similarly, many senior officers on the Allied side in World War II had faced gas as junior officers in World War I and were highly resistant to its use in World War II. It was official U.S. policy that the United States would not use chemical warfare first but would retaliate if it were used against us or our allies. Thus, the United States was prepared to retaliate. It was in part because of this preparation that American and British troops had the only military gas casualties in World War II. [Pg.103]

And at first there was reason to hope. Using a curious but well-proven method for focusing national energy, a new leader, Adolph Hitler, identified some enemies— the Socialists and the Jews—and began a systematic military buildup. Because of this rearmament, in the space of a few years unemployment was down and business was back up. [Pg.333]
