Adhesives for paper

Adhesives for paper tubes, paperboard, cormgated paperboard, and laminated fiber board are made from dispersions of clays suspended with fully hydrolyzed poly(vinyl alcohol). Addition of boric acid improves wet tack and reduces penetration into porous surfaces (312,313). The tackified grades have higher solution viscosity than unmodified PVA and must be maintained at pH 4.6—4.9 for optimum wet adhesion. 

VAE, a copolymer of vinyl acetate with minor amounts of ethylene is used as an adhesive for paper, plastics and leather and as a binder for different paints. Shoes, tubes, toys and other articles of daily use also contain VAE polymers. The hydrolysis product of VAE polymers, EVOH, is a thermoplast and can therefore be processed by extrusion and injection moulding and is used as barrier polymer for O2 and CO2 (e.g. in packaging applications). 

Large quantities of starch are consumed as a component of adhesives for paper and paperboard, especially in the production of corrugated board. Dextrins, derived from com or potato starch, are used as adhesives for laminated products and as gums for envelope construction and sealing. 

For example, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) finds application as an effective adhesive for paper products such as the old-fashioned postage stamps or envelopes. Licking the stamp or envelope flap causes the adhesive to become sticky because water plasticizes the PVOH and lowers the Tg below room temperature. On pressing the stamp to a piece of paper, the polymer chains can entangle and hydrogen bond with the cellulose in the paper. As the water...

In addition, evaluation of these resins as creping adhesives for paper towel applications has also been done. Both the resins fi-om the chemical and enzymatic syntheses give comparable results, again confirming the viability of enzyme-catalyzed products. 

In a totally different area of application, casein adhesives for paper sizing, chipboard laminating, and label gluing are more nearly casein solutions [59,60]. They are simple dispersions with ammonia or borax at moderate pH and low viscosity. They are frequently combined with latexes or soluble rosin derivatives for special performance improvements [59].

Polyvinyl alcohol is added to acrylate copolymer emulsions, which are usually surfactant-stabilized, to alter or improve their adhesive performance. Many emulsions of this type are used as components of water-based pressure-sensitive emulsions - typically, a tacky adhesive for paper can be prepared by dissolving polyvinyl alcohol in a 2-elhylhexylacrylate copolymer emulsion.

Gum arabic has long been the medium in inks and water paints (Lucas, 1932) and it has been suggested as a fixative for pigments (Emmenegger, 1975 Flieder et al., 1981). The other major traditional use has been as an adhesive for paper tapes and labels, often plasticized with glycerol. Gum arabic has been used in the past as an adhesive for textiles (Lodewijks and Leene, 1972) and insects (Lewis, 1946). It should be removable by washing in water (Flieder et al., 1981).
