For polyvinyl chloride (PVC), rubber, linoleum, cork, textile, and polyolefin floor cover, dispersion-based adhesives have been used almost exclusively. The only exceptions are molded surfaces (e.g., stairs) and the fitting of skirting boards. These applications use solvent-based contact adhesives because of their higher initial adhesion advantages in processing (Geiss 2006a). [Pg.1266]

Its advantages include impermeability to air, excellent adhesion to metal, and good resistance to oils, weathering, and low temperature. [Pg.1063]

Although most aromatic modified C-5 resins are typically higher softening point resins, certain appHcations, such as adhesives, require lower softening points. Copolymerization of a C-8—C-10 vinyl aromatic fraction with piperylenes in the presence of a C-4—C-8 mono-olefin chain-transfer stream yields resins with softening points ranging from 0—40°C (44). A particular advantage of these Hquid resins is the fact that they eliminate the need for plasticizers or oils in some pressure sensitive adhesive appHcations. [Pg.354]

Itaconic acid is a specialty monomer that affords performance advantages to certain polymeric coatings (qv) (see Polyesters, unsaturated). Emulsion stabihty, flow properties of the formulated coating, and adhesion to substrates are improved by the acid. Acrylonitrile fibers with low levels of the acid comonomer exhibit improved dye receptivity which allows mote efficient dyeing to deeper shades (see Acrylonitrile polymers Fibers, acrylic) (10,11). Itaconic acid has also been incorporated in PAN precursors of carbon and graphite fibers (qv) and into ethylene ionomers (qv) (12). [Pg.472]

In the other market areas, lead naphthenates are used on a limited basis in extreme pressure additives for lubricating oils and greases. Sodium and potassium naphthenates are used in emulsiftable oils, where they have the advantage over fatty acid soaps of having improved disinfectant properties. Catalyst uses include cobalt naphthenate as a cross-linking catalyst in adhesives (52) and manganese naphthenate as an oxidation catalyst (35). Metal naphthenates are also being used in the hydroconversion of heavy petroleum fractions (53,54) and bitumens (55). [Pg.512]

Sihcones (qv) have an advantage over organic resias ia their superior thermal stabiUty and low dielectric constants. Polyurethanes, when cured, are tough and possess outstanding abrasion and thermal shock resistance. They also have favorable electrical properties and good adhesion to most surfaces. However, polyurethanes are extremely sensitive to and can degrade after prolonged contact with moisture as a result, they are not as commonly used as epoxies and sihcones (see Urethane polymers). [Pg.531]
