Adhesion hot melt coatings

Hydrocarbon resins comprise a range of low-molecular-weight products (M < 3000) used as adhesives, hot-melt coatings, tackifying agents, inks, and additives in rubber. These include products based on monomers derived from petroleum as well as plant sources. The petroleum-derived products include polymers produced from various alkenes, isoprene, piperylene, styrene, a-methylstyrene, vinyltuolene, and dicyclopentadiene. The plant-derived products include polyterpenes obtained by the polymerization of dipentene, limonene,... [Pg.411]

Uses ndReactions. Some of the principal uses for P-pinene are for manufacturing terpene resins and for thermal isomerization (pyrolysis) to myrcene. The resins are made by Lewis acid (usuaUy AlCl ) polymerization of P-pinene, either as a homopolymer or as a copolymer with other terpenes such as limonene. P-Pinene polymerizes much easier than a-pinene and the resins are usehil in pressure-sensitive adhesives, hot-melt adhesives and coatings, and elastomeric sealants. One of the first syntheses of a new fragrance chemical from turpentine sources used formaldehyde with P-pinene in a Prins reaction to produce the alcohol, Nopol (26) (59). [Pg.413]

Styrene/isoprene/styrene (SIS) block copolymer (styrene isoprene ratio of 15/80 to 30/70 by weight) is a thermoplastic rubber. This copolymer can be changed into a good skin adhesive when it is mixed with tackifiers and oils. The advantage of this adhesive is that it can be coated with hot melt coating process... [Pg.2927]

Azelaic acid (AA), 1,9-nonanedioic acid or heptane-1,7-dicarboxylic acid, is used in manifold application areas. AA is offered in the pharmaceutical field for the treatment of acne and rosacea due to its antibacterial effect [1,2]. However, AA is much more widely applied as a monomer for the production of polymers such as alkyd resins, polyamides, and impact-proof polyesters or for the synthesis of plasticizers, lubricants, lithium complex greases, corrosion inhibitors, dielectric fluids, heat-transfer fluids, metal to glass fluxes, emulsion breakers, waxes, tobacco sheet plasticizers, hot-melt coatings and adhesives, water-soluble coating resins, hydraulic fluids, fungicides, insecticides, and so on [3-7]. [Pg.331]

A substantial use of EVA copolymers is as was additives and additives for hot-melt coatings and adhesives. Cellular cross-linked EVA copolymers are used in shoe parts. [Pg.431]

Ethylene Copolymers. Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers differ according to their vinyl acetate content and molecular mass. With increasing vinyl acetate content, compatibility with paraffin waxes decreases, but that with other binders increases. Low molecular mass types containing 25-40% vinyl acetate are readily or sufficiently soluble in solvents. With a 40% vinyl acetate content, they can be combined with polar resins and nitrocellulose. Terpolymers with free carboxyl groups exhibit improved adhesion. Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers are primarily added to waxes to improve their properties, but are also used to increase flexibility and adhesion in paints, printing inks and adhesives, and for hot melt coatings. Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers have low water vapor and gas permeabilities (barrier effect). [Pg.24]
