Section III Yeasts Recommended active yeast cultures and yeasts present in the must. Organic yeast nutrients when nutrients must be used Tolerated yeast additions Prohibited inorganic yeast nutrients... [Pg.166]

At this point, it is particularly important to note that the regulations operate to forbid the transportation of certain materials by either all or certain modes of transportation on the basis that such materials are simply too dangerous to be transported. Thus, for example, Ammonium nitrite is forbidden for all forms of transportation, whereas Amyl trichlorosilane is forbidden on passenger-carrying aircraft, railcars, and passenger vessels. Additional prohibitions are found in Part 173 of the regulations," and columns 6 and 7 of the Table establish quantity limitations for one package. [Pg.360]

Recommendation Given the similarities between NSCWM secondary wastes and industrial hazardous wastes, the committee recommends that no additional prohibitions be placed on the off-site transportation of secondary wastes (Recommendation 4-8). [Pg.24]

These ambiguities eventuady led the Federal Trade Commission to take action ia the case of cedular plastics and to restrict the use of such terminology (3). This action, ia addition to the prohibition placed on the use of certain terminology, requires the use of a caveat whenever the results of burning tests are cited. Much of the older Hterature, however, as wed as some of the more recent pubHcations, use this restricted terminology. [Pg.451]

Shale Oil. In the United States, shale oil, or oil derivable from oil shale, represents the largest potential source of Hquid hydrocarbons that can be readily processed to fuel Hquids similar to those derived from natural petroleum. Some countries produce Hquid fuels from oil shale. There is no such industry in the United States although more than 50 companies were producing oil from coal and shale in the United States in 1860 (152,153), and after the oil embargo of 1973 several companies reactivated shale-oil process development programs (154,155). Petroleum supply and price stabiHty has since severely curtailed shale oil development. In addition, complex environmental issues (156) further prohibit demonstration of commercial designs. [Pg.96]

PMMA-impregnated sol—gel-derived siUca gels have also been examined (54). Long-wave uv illumination was employed in addition to benzoyl peroxide for PMMA polymerization. This method prohibited the degradation of the siUca xerogel from moisture adsorption and desorption. Overall the material behaved more like bulk PMMA than bulk siUca, with the exception of hardness. [Pg.330]

Any substance that is not GRAS or sanctioned by use prior to 1958 (prior sanctioned) is considered a food additive. The Act prohibits the marketing of a food additive unless PDA has pubHshed a regulation that approves the intended use of the substance (22). A food additive is deemed unsafe if it is used without an approving regulation a food is deemed adulterated if it is, bears, or contains an unapproved food additive. [Pg.85]

To further improve the general safety standards, the Delaney Clause was included in the Pood Additives Amendment of 1958. The Delaney Clause states that no food additive or color additive can be deemed safe if it has been found to induce cancer when ingested by humans or animals (23). The Clause acts as an absolute prohibition on the use of any additive found to cause cancer without any regard for whether, or to what extent, the substance is hazardous to human health. As scientific advances continue, both in the realm of food technology and analysis of previously undetected contaminants, the... [Pg.85]

The food additive and GRAS rules appHcable to human foods generally apply to animal food ingredients. However, the Delaney clause s prohibition against carcinogenic substances in food additives was amended to permit carcinogenic chemicals to be fed to animals if the animals are not adversely affected and no residue can be found after slaughter. [Pg.86]

Trichloroethylene was approved for use for many years as an extraction solvent for foods. In late 1977, the Eood and Dmg Administration (EDA) harmed its use as a food additive, direcdy or indirecdy, prohibiting the use in hop extraction, decaffeination of coffee, isolation of spice oleoresins, and other apphcations. The EDA also harmed the use of trichloroethylene in cosmetic and dmg products (23). [Pg.25]

Hair colorants, the fourth class of color additives, may be used only to color scalp hair and may not be used in the area of the eye. Use of these colorants is exempt, that is, coal-tar hair dyes may be sold with cautionary labeling, directions for preliminary (patch) testing, and restrictions against use in or near the eye. The EDA diligently enforces the rules governing color additives and limits the use of, or even dehsts colorants deemed unsafe. The Hst of substances specifically prohibited for use in cosmetics is short. [Pg.286]

Offsets Policy Offsets were EPAs first application of the concept that one source could meet its environmental protection obligations by getting another source to assume additional control actions. In nonattainment areas, pollution from a proposed new source, even one that controls its emissions to the lowest possible level, would aggravate existing violations of ambient air-quahty standards and trigger the statutory prohibition. The offsets policy provided these new sources with an alternative. The source could proceed with construction plans, provided that ... [Pg.2158]

Additionally, crevice corrosion can be reduced by two techniques used successfully on most aqueous corrosion—chemical inhibition and cathodic protection. However, both these techniques may be cost prohibitive. [Pg.30]

If additional, auxiliary constraints are present that are not part of the reaction coordinate (e.g., constraints on covalent bond lengths), the formulas are much more complicated, and the algebra becomes rapidly prohibitive. The same is true when qisa. multidimensional coordinate (e.g., a set of dihedrals). Umbrella sampling approaches (discussed in previous sections) are vastly simpler in such cases and appear to be the method of choice for all but the simplest reaction coordinates. [Pg.188]
