Used industrially as a lire retardant, gasoline additive, antifoam agent, plasticizer, plastic stabilizer, textile conditioner, antistatic agent, and hydraulic fluid additive. 

In the case of foaming materials, the distillation must be carefully watched. Additional antifoaming agents can be used, but they will be coextracted and may cover some sample volatiles on the GC profile. Their use is not recommended.

Quahty control testing of siUcones utilizes a combination of physical and chemical measurements to ensure satisfactory product performance and processibihty. Eor example, in addition to the usual physical properties of cured elastomers, the plasticity of heat-cured mbber and the extmsion rate of TVR elastomers under standard conditions are important to the customer. Where the siUcone appHcation involves surface activity, a use test is frequently the only rehable indicator of performance. Eor example, the performance of an antifoaming agent can be tested by measuring the foam reduction when the sihcone emulsion is added to an agitated standard detergent solution. Tackifiers are used to increase the tackiness and the setting speed of adhesives. They increase tackiness by softening the poly(vinyl acetate) polymer in the wet and the dry adhesive film. Tackifiers are usually rosin or its derivatives or phenoHc resins. Other additives frequently needed for specific apphcation and service conditions are antifoams, biocides, wetting agents, and humectants. 

Forming additives or processing aids (2,33—37) are commonly used to render ceramic powders more processible. Binders and plasticizers (qv) are typically added to improve or aid dry powder and plastic forming, whereas deflocculants, surfactants (qv), and antifoams are commonly used in slurry processing.
