In this chapter the simulation examples are described. As seen from the Table of Contents, the examples are organised according to twelve application areas Batch Reactors, Continuous Tank Reactors, Tubular Reactors, Semi-Continuous Reactors, Mixing Models, Tank Flow Examples, Process Control, Mass Transfer Processes, Distillation Processes, Heat Transfer, and Dynamic Numerical Examples. There are aspects of some examples which relate them to more than one application area, which is usually apparent from the titles of the examples. Within each section, the examples are listed in order of their degree of difficulty. 

With the gel equation, we can conveniently compute the consequences of the self-similar spectrum and later compare to experimental observations. The material behaves somehow in between a liquid and a solid. It does not qualify as solid since it cannot sustain a constant stress in the absence of motion. There are dozens of other examples around the house for which we have similar quality standards in terms of their resistance to flow. Examples include other food products such as honey, pancake syrup, gravy, and ice cream toppings. Hygiene products include shampoo, hand lotion, and liquid soap. We might also cite pharmaceutical formulations, such as cough medicines, milk of magnesia, and liquid dietary supplements, as well as home and car care products such as caulks, glues, and motor oils. 

Just as a consumer may judge the quality of a product by its resistance to flow, so also quality assurance technicians in the chemical process industries may judge the quality of a fluid material or product by its resistance to flow. Examples include solutions of polymers (where a solution s resistance to flow is indicative of the quality of the undissolved polymer), asphalt formulations for roads and parking lots, lubricating oils, etc. 

We analyze the transport of a chemical (concentration C) along a fluid flow with mean velocity vx (x designates the direction of the flow).
