Actuating mechanisms

Valve, trap, and baffle can be combined in such a manner that elastomers can be used in the valve and contamination is controlled from the valve-actuator mechanisms and from the gasket of the valve-plate seal (Fig. 15) (42).

Emergency isolation valves (EIV) should be located based one two principals (1) the amount of isolatable inventory that is desired and (2) protection of the EIV from the affects of external events. EIV valves are normally required to have a firesafe rating (i.e. minimal leakage and operability capability, Ref. Table 14). Valves and their actuating mechanisms should be afforded adequate protection when they are required to be located in an area that has potential to experience explosion and fire incidents.

Actuating mechanisms include control panels, air receivers, valve actuators, instrumentation controls or tubing, etc. 

Finley et al. [32] have developed a system to meet the various challenges offered by this automation, i.e. an actuator mechanism capable of both wasting and collecting metered doses. In addition, this actuator was required to shake the canisters and prevent waste actuations from entering the laboratory environment without the need for a dedicated fume hood. 

Of particular interest to the operation of the system is the design of the actuator mechanism that shakes the canister, and performs both wasting and quantitative sample collection functions without active carry-over from one set of actuations to the next.

The hoses supplied to the valve actuator mechanism could be connected at any time even though the Phillips operating procedure stipulated that the hoses should never be connected during maintenance. 

The air supply valves for the actuator mechanism air hoses were in the open position so that air would flow and cause the actuator to rotate the DEMCO valve when the hoses were connected. 

The DEMCO valve actuator mechanism did not have its lockout device in place. 

Accdg to Ref 3, pp 216—19 229, the original acoustic homing system was called Kranich and the later version Pudel. The Pudel fuze was not sufficiently developed to be used in combat, but the Kranich fuze was. The Kranich consisted of a light diaphragm-actuated mechanism which responded to the sound of airplane propellers at a range of 15 meters. It was constructed on the same principle as the Pudel fuze. It was planned to install the Kranich system on some Rheintochter missiles... 

Reactor of NS 910 was frozen , all absorber rods being completely inserted. In such condition the alloy in shrouds of shim rods and automatic control rods was frozen . Cables were dismantled from all CPS actuating mechanisms. Operational time of the reactor was about 80% of its lifetime. 

Nuclear safety of reactors of the damaged NSs is ensured through the application of emgineering and organizational measmes excluding extraction from (displacement in) the core of control rods and shim rods (no way for power supply to actuating mechanisms of the control and protection system, application of mechanical stops, impossibility of using hand drives). 

A pressure-point-controlled actuation mechanism, which builds on the inertia of the actuation finger, guarantees constant performance in terms of delivery volume, plume geometry, and particle size distribution. A manipulation of the spray performance is almost impossible. 

Many kinds of sensors are needed to measure the process parameters important for effective operation of any type of chemical process. The principles of manual or automated process control require, first of all, an appropriate variable, which needs to be measured—temperature, pressure, pH, viscosity, water content, etc.—in order to study the progress of the reaction or separation process. For the measured variable to be significant in the control of the process it must represent a control parameter, such as steam flow, pump speed, or acid addition rate which, when altered, will cause a response in the measured variable. Finally, there must be some actuating mechanism between the...
