Activity system design

This tool, described in detail in Chapter 10, will translate strategic choices into activities. These activities, in turn, will lead to the processes needed to perform them. Because application of the activity system method requires strategic choices, they should have been made or they should be made during the supply chain strategy design. For this, the team must be empowered to make needed decisions. Changing supply chains in ways that are counter to strategic direction will lead to confusion, if not catastrophe. [Pg.125]

Failure Mode and Effects Analysis. The system design activity usually emphasizes the attainment of performance objectives in a timely and cost-efficient fashion. The failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) procedure considers the system from a failure point of view to determine how the product might fail. The terms design failure mode and effects analysis (DFMEA) and failure mode effects and criticaUty analysis (EMECA) also are used. This EMEA technique is used to identify and eliminate potential failure modes early in the design cycle, and its success is well documented (3,4). [Pg.6]

A spherical preventer contains a packing element that seals the space around a drillpipe. This preventer is not designed to shut off the well when the drillpipe is out of the hole, although it allows stripping operations and some pipe rotation. Hydril Corporation, Shaffer and other manufacturers provide several models with different packing system designs for specific types of service. The ram-type preventer seals the annulus around the drillpipe however, each size of ram is designated for only one size of drillpipe. In other words, the preventer with 5-in. pipe rams can provide a seal only on 5-in. drillpipe. The preventer with blind rams is used to shut in the well if the pipe is not in the hole. If this type of preventer is activated with the pipe in the hole, the pipe can be cut. [Pg.1101]
