Acrylic binders types

Many acrylic polymers, specifically (poly)methyl methacrylate and (poly) ethyl methacrylate, show great strength at low concentrations in the green tape. This benefit also contributes to binder removal later in the process, since lower binder content leads to lower binder residue. Acrylic binders are also plasticized or made flexible by a wide variety of additives, which gives you the freedom to choose a plasticizer that burns out cleanly. The acrylic binders, when used as dissolved polymers, can be made flexible by both Type I and Type II plasticizers. These plasticizers are addressed in detail in Section 2.5. We have also seen the methacrylates exhibit behavior quite the reverse of "common sense. It has been seen in more than one solvent system, with different powder chemistries, that more binder can lead to denser tape. This will be discussed in Section 4.3. [Pg.42]

The medium is the binder which provides for the adhesion of pigments. The most important types are the temper media (glue, egg, and gum), the oils, and wax. In addition, for wall painting there is the tme fresco technique, where the pigments are laid down in a fresh, wet plaster preparation layer. Several other media have been used, but much less frequendy, eg, casein temper. In modem paints, a number of synthetic resins are used for this purpose. The principal field of application for synthetic polymers as art materials is that of paint binders, which developed in the second half of the twentieth century when manufacturers of artists paints and varnishes realized the potential of synthetic resins used in the decorative household and industrial paint market [81]. Binders for thermosetting powder coatings are often called a hardener. The hardeners are a mixture of a primary resin and a cross-linker. The major types of binders can be limited to polyester, epoxy, hybrid epoxypolyester, acrylic, and UV cure types. Latex describes the type of resin or binder used. Exterior paint usually contains 100% acrylic latex emulsions, which usually are copolymers of methylmethacrylate with butyiacrylate or 2-ethylhexylacrylate. This combination stands up well against uv radiation. Interior paint has no uv requirement, and the best combination for cost is a copolymer of vinylacetate and acrylates. Organic coatings are used to block the penetration of carbon dioxide or chloride ions. They form a continuous polymeric film on the surface of the concrete, of a thickness ranging from 100 to 300 pm. The binder can already be present in the liquid paint as a polymer, or the polymer can be formed due to chemical reactions between monomeric components that are mixed just before application. Modem coating systems are usually built up of several layers applied consecutively. They are compatible with the alkalinity of the concrete and are based on various types of polymers (e. g. acrylate, polyurethane, epoxy), pigments and additives, and are made suitable for application by the addition of solvents or diluents. [Pg.233]

Modified phenolic resins are condensation products of the resol type which contain other starting materials besides phenol and formaldehyde (e.g., acrylic monomers). The phenolic component itself is often modified (alkyl- or arylphenols). Modification with rosin is the most important one. The compatibility of phenolic resins with other binders can be substantially improved by modification. Rosin-modified phenolic resins may be combined with linseed oils and alkyd resins. Furthermore, their polymer class and composition may be determined. The PVA type has a vinyl acetate/2-ethylhexyl acrylate copolymer binder.
