Acid resistance transmission

Fillers often have a significant effect on the moisture resistance, the moisture-vapor transmission rate, and the solvent and chemical resistance of the cured adhesive bond. The effect, however, can be in either direction. Some fillers such as calcium carbonate tend to lower acid resistance, whereas others, such as silica or aluminum, may tend to lower alkali resistance. [Pg.177]

Fused silica is a general classification within which is a range of varieties and types with differences in purity, transmission and grade. This glass may be used up to 900°C in continuous service it resists attack by a great many chemical reagents, rapid attack occurring only in hydrofluoric acid and concentrated alkali solutions. [Pg.870]

Mammalian cells (and some bacteria) lack the enzymes required for folate synthesis from PABA and depend on exogenous sources of folate therefore, they are not susceptible to sulfonamides. Sulfonamide resistance may occur as a result of mutations that (1) cause overproduction of PABA, (2) cause production of a folic acid-synthesizing enzyme that has low affinity for sulfonamides, or (3) impair permeability to the sulfonamide. Dihydropteroate synthase with low sulfonamide affinity is often encoded on a plasmid that is transmissible and can disseminate rapidly and widely. Sulfonamide-resistant dihydropteroate synthase mutants also can emerge under selective pressure. [Pg.1032]

Water absorption is less than 0.1wt% after 24 hours. However, PBT is not recommended for extended use in water or aqueous solutions above 52C (125F).112 PBT plastics are also intrinsically resistant to detergents, weak acids and bases, aliphatic hydrocarbons, fluorinated hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, ethylene glycol, carbon tetrachloride, oils, and fats at room temperature. They also exhibit good resistance to motor oil, gasoline, transmission fluids, and brake fluids at temperatures to 60C (HOF).113... [Pg.83]

Salmonella typhimurium DT104 is usually resistant to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, sulfonamides, and tetracycline. An outbreak of 25 culture-confirmed cases of multidrug-resistant S. typhimurium DT104 has been identified in Denmark (54). The strain was resistant to the above-mentioned antibiotics and nalidixic acid and had reduced susceptibility to fluoroquinolones. A swineherd was identified as the primary source (54). The DT104 strain was also found in cases of salmonellosis in Washington State, and soft cheese made with unpasteurized milk was identified as an important vehicle of its transmission (55). [Pg.709]

Because there is no resistant cyst, transmission from host to host must be direct. The inflammatory response in trichomoniasis is the major pathology associated with this organism however, the mechanisms of induction are not known. It is likely that mechanical irritation resulting from contact between the parasite and vaginal epithelium is a major cause of this response but the organism produces high concentrations of acidic end-products and poly amines, both of which would also irritate local tissues. [Pg.96]
