Various materials are used for medical and surgical applications. Closely-woven cotton is widely used throughout the world in operating theatres and, when dry, has some ability to resist transmission of infection by direct contact. However, even when new it has no resistance to wetting out. [Pg.187]

This chapter first provides an introduction to the acoustic properties of textiles, which include propagation, absorption, and scattering of sound. The properties can be characterized by various parameters such as flow resistance, transmission loss, absorption coefficient, and scattering coefficient. Test and evaluation methods for obtaining these parameters are discussed. Based on the acoustic properties of the textiles, acoustics designers can make use of textiles in buildings and office environments to optimize sound quaUty depending on particular requirements. [Pg.103]

Polyacrylate elastomers find limited use in hydrauhc systems and gasket apphcations because of their superior heat resistance compared to the nitrile mbbers (219,220). Ethylene—acrylate copolymers were introduced in 1975. The apphcations include transmission seals, vibration dampers, dust boots, and steering and suspension seals. Further details and performance comparisons with other elastomers are given in reference 221 (see also Elastomers, SYNTHETIC-ACRYLIC ELASTOTffiRS). [Pg.172]

PVA fiber is best fit for reinforcement of oil brake hoses for cars that require high reUabiUty, because of excellent mechanical properties and good chemical resistance to pressure—transmission Hquid contained in the hose. [Pg.342]

Weathering. Articles fabricated from FEP are unaffected by weather, and thek resistance to extreme heat, cold, and uv kradiation suits them for apphcations in radar and other electronic components. For example, after 15 years of solar exposure in Florida, the tensile strength (73) and light transmission (96%) of a 25-p.m thick film was unchanged and the film remained crystal clear. Elongation increased slightly for the first 5 to 7 years of outdoor exposure, probably as a result of stress relaxation. Beyond 10 years, a small decrease was observed. [Pg.361]

The high fluorine content contributes to resistance to attack by essentially all chemicals and oxidizing agents however, PCTFE does swell slightly ia halogenated compounds, ethers, esters, and selected aromatic solvents. Specific solvents should be tested. PCTFE has the lowest water-vapor transmission rate of any plastic (14,15), is impermeable to gases (see also Barrierpolymers), and does not carbonize or support combustion. [Pg.393]

AH intrinsic germanium metal sold is specified to be N-type with a resistivity of at least 40 H-cm at 25°C or 50 H-cm at 20°C. Germanium metal prepared for use in infrared optics is usuaHy specified to be N-type with a resistivity of 4-40 Hem, to be stress-free and fine annealed, and to have certain minimum transmission (or maximum absorption) characteristics in the 3—5 or 8—12 pm wavelength ranges. Either polycrystaHine or single-crystal material is specified. [Pg.280]

Friction Materials. PhenoHc friction materials are made from mol ding compounds developed to meet the extraordinary demands required by friction elements in the transportation industries. Friction materials are used for brake linings, clutch facings, and transmission bands. A moderately high coefficient of friction, which is temperature-independent, is needed. In addition, the material must be high in strength, low in wear and abrasion, and resistant to moisture and hydrauHc fluids. [Pg.305]
