Fichter and Kern O first reported that uric acid could be electrochemically oxidized. The reaction was studied at a lead oxide electrode but without control of the anode potential. Under such uncontrolled conditions these workers found that in lithium carbonate solution at 40-60 °C a yield of approximately 70% of allantoin was obtained. In sulfuric acid solution a 63% yield of urea was obtained. A complete material balance was not obtained nor were any mechanistic details developed. In 1962 Smith and Elving 2) reported that uric acid gave a voltammetric oxidation peak at a wax-impregnated spectroscopic graphite electrode. Subsequently, Struck and Elving 3> examined the products of this oxidation and reported that in 1 M HOAc complete electrochemical oxidation required about 2.2 electrons per molecule of uric acid. The products formed were 0.25 mole C02,0.25 mole of allantoin or an allantoin precursor, 0.75 mole of urea, 0.3 mole of parabanic acid and 0.30 mole of alloxan per mole of uric acid oxidized. Reliable mechanistic conclusions require high intrazeolite yields that account for the majority of the substrate mass balance. This can be a challenge because of the small-scale reactions often conducted for mechanistic studies. In addition, rapid removal of the products from the zeolite, and/or low conversions to decrease residence time, is occasionally necessary because of the sensitivity of the reaction products to the zeolite environment.44,45 Intrazeolite products are generally recovered by extractive techniques from either the intact zeolite, or from a mixture formed after mild digestion of the zeolite. Polar solvents such as tetrahydrofuran or acetonitrile coupled with a continuous extraction technique is in particular an effective means to remove polar products with an affinity for the interior of the zeolite.44 Zeolite digestion with mineral acids, in order to liberate the products, must be conducted with care in order to prevent acid catalyzed product decomposition or reaction.46,47... [Pg.232]

The direction of a reaction can be assessed straightforwardly by comparing the equilibrium constant (Keq) and the ratio of the product solubility to the substrate solubility (Zsat) [39]. In the case of the zwitterionic product amoxicillin, the ratio of the equilibrium constant and the saturated mass action ratio for the formation of the antibiotic was evaluated [40]. It was found that, at every pH, Zsat (the ratio of solubilities, called Rs in that paper) was about one order of magnitude greater in value than the experimental equilibrium constant (Zsat > Keq), and hence product precipitation was not expected and also not observed experimentally in a reaction with suspended substrates. The pH profile of all the compounds involved in the reaction (the activated acyl substrate, the free acid by-product, the antibiotic nucleus, and the product) could be predicted with reasonable accuracy, based only on charge and mass balance equations in combination with enzyme kinetic parameters [40]. [Pg.296]

The functional properties of food proteins is a subject of considerable interest and importance. For example, in the last two decades much effort has gone into the development of various nonconventional sources of protein. The vast majority of this effort, however, has been concentrated on various aspects of production of economical protein resources and not on the actual utilization of these resources. The result is that many nonconventional protein resources, while they can now be produced fairly easily, can in many cases be produced only in a form lacking desirable functional properties. The point is simply that a protein, even though it may have excellent amino acid balance and all other prerequisites for a nutritionally superior protein, will have no impact on human nutrition unless it has the functional properties necessary for its incorporation into food systems. A specific example of this problem is the case of fish protein concentrate, the utilization of which is severely restricted by its very limited solubility in water.
