Rational animal

In Dependent Rational Animals, Alasdair MacIntyre (1999) takes these facts about human life as the starting point for an exploration of what a flourishing community is. He concludes that to provide the care individuals need, such communities must consist of networks of relationships in which there is unconditional giving and receiving — unconditional in the sense of not being conditional on the qualities and aptitudes of the receiving person, or on what they have contributed in the past, but only on their needs. Such networks foster and are sustained by people who are independent practical reasoners . [Pg.131]

A rational animal should spend most of its time working steadily on the VR activity and occasionally visit the VI alternative to collect any reward that might have come due after its last visit to it. This intuitively plausible idea can be stated more precisely with the help of Fig. IX. I Clearly, the animal s interest is to choose a proportion that will maximize the sum of the VI and the VR rewards. This occurs when it spends p percent of its... [Pg.94]

Beef and dairy cattle. Canola meal has gained widespread acceptance as a protein supplement in beef and dairy rations. Research has shown its effectiveness in a variety of production and management situations. Lactation trials have demonstrated that canola meal will maintain or slightly improve milk production relative to soybean meal-based rations. Improved milk production may in part reflect the amino acid content of the bypass protein fraction of canola meal. In beef cattle rations, animal performance has been shown to meet or exceed industry standards when canola meal is incorporated. Canola meal can be used as the sole protein supplement in rations for growing and finishing cattle (29). [Pg.2366]

The sulfonylureas effectiveness as hypoglycemic agents resulted from a serendipitous observation made in man, not from a rational animal research program designed to discover such agents. Many major therapeutic breakthroughs have been uncovered by this approach. [Pg.117]
