Acceleration weathering

A number of laboratory procedures even more rapid than the accelerated Weather-o-meter have been described for the deterrnination of expected weatherabihty of coating asphalts. Research sponsored by the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association describes a stepwise procedure to determine changes in the cmde asphalt source (see Asphalt). [Pg.216]

The performance of organic finishes on test is evaluated by visual observation and by physical tests made upon coated specimens that have been exposed for various periods of time to natural or accelerated weathering conditions. Electrical tests are sometimes used on immersed specimens. [Pg.1081]

Published by the Plastics Design Library, PDLCOM is an exhaustive reference source of how exposure environments influence the physical characteristics of plastics. Data include resistance to thousands of chemicals, weathering and UV exposure (i.e. color change after accelerated weathering or outdoor exposure) sterilization (radiation, ethylene oxide, steam, etc.) thermal air and water aging environmental stress cracking and much more. [Pg.596]

Transparent PVC plates were coated with a 70 pm thick film of an epoxy-acrylate resin containing 0.5 % of a benzotriazole UV absorber. They were first UV cured for one second and then exposed at 40°C to the low intensity radiations of a QUV accelerated weathering tester. The extent of the degradation was followed by Invisible spectroscopy, a very sensitive method that permits detec-... [Pg.215]

The spectroscopic method is also useful for correlating the rate of PC degradation under accelerated weathering to that under natural weathering conditions. [Pg.105]

Accelerated weathering is based on using an artificial light source in a cabinet in which the humidity, water spray and temperature can also be controlled. The core feature of an... [Pg.71]

The general requirements for accelerated weathering apparatus are given in ISO 4892-1 [29], whilst ISO 4892 Parts 2-4 [26-28] deal more specifically with xenon arcs, fluorescent tubes and carbon arcs respectively. ISO 4892 refers to ISO 9370 [30] (Instrumental determination of radiant exposure in weathering tests), and CIE publication 85 (Solar spectral irradiance) [31]. [Pg.73]

Further uncertainty arises from the environmental exposure. For accelerated tests, repeatability can be estimated from exposure of replicate test pieces and minimised by control of the exposure conditions. Particular points to consider are spatial variation in temperature as well as mean temperature and air flow in ovens. In accelerated weathering apparatus, spatial variation and variation with time of light sources can be very significant. [Pg.134]

The mathematical methods used for interpolation and extrapolation of the data obtained from accelerated tests, as described in Chapters 8 and 9, include both the mechanistic and the empirical. Arrhenius formula, based on chemical rate kinetics and relating the rate of degradation to temperature, is used very widely. Where there are sufficient data, statistical methods can be applied and probabilities and confidence limits calculated. For many applications a high level of precision is unnecessary. The practitioners of accelerated weathering are only too keen to tell you of its quirks and inaccuracies, but this obscures... [Pg.178]
