Comparing accelerated results carried out in different laboratories with different apparatus (particularly for artificial weathering) is not dissimilar because of the large differences which are often found because of poor reproducibility. It is always advantageous to include a known reference material if one is available. Differences are generally much reduced if the ranking of material is considered rather than absolute values. 

An aging atudy has heen completed which evaluated a number of polymeric materials for potential use as 1) protective coatings for back surfaces of mirrors and 2) solar hellostat edge seals. These investigations were conducted in an artificial weathering chamber that accelerated thermal cycling. We observed the primary mirror failure mode to be silver corrosion resulting from moisture exposure. 

The 39 materials were subjected to accelerated heat ageing for a series of times and temperatures, artificial weathering and exposure to ozone. This report details the results of the accelerated heat ageing tests and their analysis for the prediction of changes after long-term natural ageing. In laboratories, coatings are artificially weathered in specially designed apparatus to simulate or measure the aging processes that occur during natural weathering. Artificial weathering involves a smaller number of parameters than natural weathering but can be controlled more uniformly and allows accelerated test conditions [9.49]-[9.51]. 

After the pure loading tests artificial weathering tests are also required. In these weather exposure tests strips taken in the warp and weft directions are subjected to a standard climate. The exposure time is normally 1000 hours. After this time the strengths are determined. A time acceleration factor of 10 can be achieved.
