Gemeprost (73 16.16-dimethvl-trans-A -prostaglandin-E]) is dramatically more potent on a dosage basis as an abortifacient than prostaglandin E2 itself and has fewer side effects. The gem-dimethyl groups at C-16 protect the alcohol moiety at C-15 from rapid metabolic oxidation. [Pg.11]

Many dietary supplements should be avoided in pregnancy because they may have emmenagogue activity, promoting menstruation. Some herbs that are considered emmenagogues are feverfew, garlic, and hawthorn [4]. St. John s wort should be avoided in pregnancy due to its emmenagogue and abortifacient properties. [Pg.738]

According to EPA (1986a), lead was used in preparations sold as abortifacients in Britain around the turn of the century. These preparations were apparently effective at levels that produced marked signs of lead poisoning in the women. The available studies were methodologically inadequate and did not provide dose-effect information. Evidence for adverse reproductive outcomes in women with obvious lead poisoning is of little help in defining the effects of lead at much lower exposure levels. [Pg.198]

Other medicinal features to consider when searching for plants with potential as phospholipases A2 are abortifacient, analgesic, antipyretic, and hypoglycemic uses. Such features are present in the following plant species. [Pg.17]

A critical factor for Goniothalamus use as a medicinal herb is its content of styryl-lactones, which promote apoptosis in mammalian cells. One might set the hypothesis that the abortifacient and/or postnatal and anti-inflammatory traditional uses of Goniothalamus... [Pg.213]

Toxicoses from pine needles have been reported in field cases, but are rare and have only occurred in pregnant cattle. No toxicity other than abortion in cattle has been demonstrated from ICA or ICA derivatives. However, the abietane-type resin acids in ponderosa pine needles (concentrated in new growth pine tips) have been shown to be toxic, but not abortifacient at high doses, when administered orally to cattle, goats, and hamsters. Pathological evaluations of intoxicated animals includes nephrosis, edema of the CNS, myonecrosis, and gastroenteritis (Stegelmeier et al., 1996). While abietane-type resin acids may contribute to the occasional toxicoses reported in the field, they do not contribute to the abortions. Most cow losses in the field are associated with difficult parturition or post abortion toxemia due to retained fetal membranes. [Pg.63]

Toxicological observations indicate that pulegone is an insect neuro-toxin, as well as an abortifacient in women and in animals. (15)-( — )-Pulegone is far less toxic in mice than (li )-(+) pulegone (both hepatotoxic and pneumotoxic). [Pg.165]

Reports, primarily from Brazil, of congenital anomalies and fetal death subsequent to use of misoprostol alone, as an abortifacient, have been received. [Pg.918]

Patients must be advised of the abortifacient property and warned not to give the drug to others. [Pg.918]
