Microencapsulation with PCL using the solvent evaporation method can be experimentally difficult. For example, PCL was the only polymer of five that failed to yield spherically shaped microcapsules using this technique (82). The insecticide Abate has been incorporated into PCL (21% loading) by the solvent separation method in a comparative study, PCL afforded good-quality microspheres although poly (methyl methacrylate) microcapsules were smoother and had fewer defects (83). [Pg.90]

Dicldnson and associates (1 ) reported that the Consolidated Mosquito Abatement District of Fresno County, Calif., stopped a large population of Aedea mosquitoes from biting as soon as the clouds produced by an insecticide fog applicator had passed the field. This machine was also used to treat 160 acres of irrigated pasture land that had been considered untreatable. After 24 hours no adult mosquitoes were observed. [Pg.48]

The organophosphorus insecticide Abate has a very low mammalian toxicity, yet it is extremely effective as a mosquito larvicide in concentrations as low as 0.005 p.p.m. [Pg.191]

The introduction of Abate into potable water stored in cisterns and drums to control Aedes aegypti larvae has been investigated. To reduce the frequency of application and still maintain concentrations in the range 0.005-0.1 p.p.m., new formulations have been developed the most promising is in a foamed plastic which releases the insecticide at a controlled rate over a long time. The rate of release depends upon toxicant and surfactant concentration as well as polymerization conditions of the plastic matrix. Formulations have produced lethal concentrations to larvae in reservoirs for 20 weeks. [Pg.191]

Compositions for the abatement of the mosquito have included anacardic acid, the primary function of which may be to enhance the shelf life through its UV absorbing properties [274], The same might apply to formulated products with insecticidal activity, containing anacardic acid, and based on cyclodextrin inclusion complexes of neem extract [275]. [Pg.153]

The outline of the environmental health business is shown in Table I. This field includes indoor consumer products such as household insecticides, outdoor consumer products such as those for pest control, and public-health related products for mosquito abatement and professional vector control. All these products are required to have superior safety characteristics. The size of the world market for the environmental health business in terms of retail sales is also shown in Table I. The market size is estimated to be roughly 7.2 billion dollars overall, of which about 70%, or 5.0 billion dollars, represents the indoor use insecticide market. The size of the outdoor use insecticide and public health insecticide markets is 1.4 billion and 800 million dollars, respectively. [Pg.9]

B. Matrix Incorporation. Matrix incorporation is probably the most common method for the preparation of physically bonded pesticides. Five methods illustrate the wide variety available for the preparation of incorporated aldicarb and dif lubenzuron (Dimilin Both are carbamate insecticides. Selected methods were used for the matrix adsorption of the following organic insecticides Abate, Dursban, malathion, and naled ... [Pg.19]
