Stem layer adsorption was involved in the discussion of the effect of ions on f potentials (Section V-6), electrocapillary behavior (Section V-7), and electrode potentials (Section V-8) and enters into the effect of electrolytes on charged monolayers (Section XV-6). More speciflcally, this type of behavior occurs in the adsorption of electrolytes by ionic crystals. A large amount of wotk of this type has been done, partly because of the importance of such effects on the purity of precipitates of analytical interest and partly because of the role of such adsorption in coagulation and other colloid chemical processes. Early studies include those by Weiser [157], by Paneth, Hahn, and Fajans [158], and by Kolthoff and co-workers [159], A recent calorimetric study of proton adsorption by Lyklema and co-workers [160] supports a new thermodynamic analysis of double-layer formation. A recent example of this is found in a study... [Pg.412]

Equilibration of the interface, and the establislnnent of equilibrium between the two phases, may be very slow. Holcomb et al [183] found that the density profile p(z) equilibrated much more quickly than tire profiles of nonnal and transverse pressure, f yy(z) and f jfz), respectively. The surface tension is proportional to the z-integral of Pj z)-Pj z). The bulk liquid in the slab may continue to contribute to this integral, indicatmg lack of equilibrium, for very long times if the initial liquid density is chosen a little too high or too low. A recent example of this kind of study, is the MD simulation of the liquid-vapour surface of water at temperatures between 316 and 573 K by Alejandre et al [184]. [Pg.2271]

A recent example is the substrate analogue thymidine 5 -[a,P-iaiido]triphosphate [141171-20-2] (TMPNPP) (2) which competitively inhibits the human iaimunodeficiency vims-1 (HIV-1) reverse transcriptase (HIV-1 RT) with a iC value of 2.4 micromolar ]lM) (9). The substrate is thymidine 5 -triphosphate... [Pg.319]

These difficulties have prompted a search for novel techniques for crystallization of membrane proteins. Two approaches have given promising results one using antibodies to solubilize the proteins and the second using continuous lipidic phases as crystallization media. Complexes with specific antibodies have larger polar surfaces than the membrane protein itself and are therefore likely to form crystals more easily in an aqueous enviroment. A recent example of an antibody-membrane protein complex utilized an Fv... [Pg.224]

Trifluoromethanesulfonic (triflic) anhydride is commercially available or can be prepared easily by the reaction of triflic acid with phosphorus pentoxide [66] This moderately hygroscopic colorless liquid is a useful reagent for the preparation of various organic derivatives of triflic acid A large variety of organic ionic triflates can be prepared from triflic anhydride A recent example is the preparation of unusual oxo-bridged dicatiomc salts of different types [SS, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93] (equations 38-44) Stabilized dication ether salts of the Huckel aromatic system and some other systems (equations 38 and 39) can be prepared in one step by the... [Pg.956]

Thionyl imide, HNSO, is a thermally unstable gas, which polymerizes readily. It can be prepared by the reaction of thionyl chloride with ammonia in the gas phase. Organic derivatives RNSO have higher thermal stability, especially when R = Ar. The typical synthesis involves the reaction of a primary amine or, preferably, a silylated amine with thionyl chloride. A recent example is the preparation of FcNSO (Fc = ferrocenyl) shown in Eq. 9.8. In common with other thionylimines, FcNSO readily undergoes SO2 elimination in the presence of a base, e.g., KO Bu, to give the corresponding sulfur diimide FcNSNFc. [Pg.168]

Although it is far more common to synthesize these substrates using the Feist-Benary reaction (Section 4.1), the Paal-Knorr reaction can also be used to prepare 2,3-disubstituted furans. In a recent example, Castagnoli converted 1,4-ketoaldehyde 40 into furan 41 in 97% yield upon exposure to hot sulfuric acid. ... [Pg.173]

There are four possible classes of bis-5(4H)-oxazolones (cf. 8-11). Compounds of type 8 may be prepared by the Erlenmeyer reaction on dialdehydes. The compound in which R is derived from the 4,4 -dialdehyde of diphenyl ether (R = CgHs) is a recent example. ... [Pg.79]

When a positively charged substituent such as the trimethylam-monio group is anywhere on the ring, but most effectively when it is ortho to the leaving group, it can favorably affect the entropy of activation with anionic nucleophiles and accelerate reaction. A recent example of reagent-substituent interaction is the electrophilic substitution of 2-carboxybiphenyl, nitration (non-polar solvent) of which occurs only at the 2 -position and not the 4 -position and has been postulated to be due to the interaction of the nitronium ion with the carboxyl group. [Pg.219]

Almost all dyes are quinones or azaquinones of compound 2. The majority are used for thermal transfer processes a recent example is compound 306 (98USP5792587). The second major class are azo dyes, prepared either from aromatic diazonium salts as in compound 307 (95GEP4319296) or from a triazolopyridine 3-diazonium salt as in 308 (81BRP2054630). [Pg.57]

The Ratnberg-Backlund reaction has been used for the preparation of strained unsaturated ring compounds that are difficult to obtain by other methods. A recent example is the synthesis of ene-diyne 5" that has been used as starting material for a Bergman cyclization ... [Pg.236]

A recent example of a CA model of the immune response in AIDS is Pandley s four-cell model using interactions among macrophages (= M) containing parts of the virus on their surface, helper T cells (= H), cytotoxic T cells (= C) and the virus (= V) ([pand89], [pandQl]) ... [Pg.428]

A general method for the synthesis of N-unsubstituted aziridine-2-carboxylates involves a triphenylphosphine-mediated reductive cyclization of hydroxy azido esters [17-22]. A recent example involves the treatment of [1-hydroxy-a-azido ester 15 (Scheme 3.6) with PPh3 to give aziridine 16 in 90% yield [19]. a-Hydroxy- 3-azido esters undergo similar reactions to give aziridine-2-carboxylates [20-22],... [Pg.76]

Sulfinyl chlorides may be prepared from the corresponding thiols or disulfides by oxidative reactions rather than by reductions of sulfonyl compounds. A recent example, which improves the earlier procedure of Douglass, is given by equation (3)50. The chemistry of sulfinic acids and their derivatives has been reviewed51 52,53. [Pg.62]

Polysaccharides can regulate weak interactions between protein molecules. A recent example is the effect of low molecular weight heparin molecules on the weak dimerisation of the plasminogen growth factor NKl, or at least a mutant thereof [135]. [Pg.243]

Base-catalyzed Diels-Alder reactions are rare (Section 1.4). A recent example is the reaction of 3-hydroxy-2-pyrone (145) with chiral N-acryloyl oxazolidones 146 that uses cinchona alkaloid as an optically active base catalyst [97] (Table 4.25). Only endo adducts were obtained with the more reactive dienophile 146 (R = H), the best diastereoselectivity and yields being obtained with an i-Pr0H/H20 ratio of 95 5. The reaction of 146 (R = Me) is very slow, and a good adduct yield was only obtained when the reaction was carried out in bulky alcohols such as t-amyl alcohol and t-butanol. [Pg.190]

One frequently used method for synthesizing 2-quinolones is to react anilines with malonic esters. This reaction can be difficult to accomphsh by conventional methods [48,49] since high temperatures (250-350 °C) are required for the generation of an o -oxoketene intermediate 12 (Fig. 6). In a recent example of this type of reaction, Stadler et al. synthesized 4-hydroxyquinolin-2(lH)-ones by using a microwave-assisted procedure (Scheme 5) [50]. [Pg.317]

In principle, numerous reports have detailed the possibility to modify an enzyme to carry out a different type of reaction than that of its attributed function, and the possibility to modify the cofactor of the enzyme has been well explored [8,10]. Recently, the possibility to directly observe reactions, normally not catalyzed by an enzyme when choosing a modified substrate, has been reported under the concept of catalytic promiscuity [9], a phenomenon that is believed to be involved in the appearance of new enzyme functions during the course of evolution [23]. A recent example of catalytic promiscuity of possible interest for novel biotransformations concerns the discovery that mutation of the nucleophilic serine residue in the active site of Candida antarctica lipase B produces a mutant (SerlOSAla) capable of efficiently catalyzing the Michael addition of acetyl acetone to methyl vinyl ketone [24]. The oxyanion hole is believed to be complex and activate the carbonyl group of the electrophile, while the histidine nucleophile takes care of generating the acetyl acetonate anion by deprotonation of the carbon (Figure 3.5). [Pg.69]

A very elegant approach has been developed by Kanerva et al. DKR of N-hetrocyclic a-amino esters is achieved using CAL-A [54]. Racemization occurs when acetaldehyde is released in situ from the acyl donor. In this case aldehyde-catalyzed racemization of the product cannot occur (Figure 4.28). This is one of the few examples reported for DKR of secondary amines (For a recent example see the above text and Ref. [38]). [Pg.105]

A recent example of the acylase method is shown in Figure 6.35. N-Benzyloxy-carbonylproline is resolved by a proline acylase in a strain of Arthrohacter sp. The... [Pg.146]

With a-monosubstituted ylides the oxidation results in the formation of alkenes (by subsequent Wittig reaction on the intermediate aldehyde). A recent example of such synthesis is found in the preparation of all-(Z)-cyclododecate-traene by oxidation of the appropriate bis-ylide [33]. It must be pointed out that an approach of the same macrocycle based on ring closing metathesis was found ineffective. [Pg.46]

One Important aspect of the supercomputer revolution that must be emphasized Is the hope that not only will It allow bigger calculations by existing methods, but also that It will actually stimulate the development of new approaches. A recent example of work along these lines Involves the solution of the Hartree-Fock equations by numerical Integration In momentum space rather than by expansion In a basis set In coordinate space (2.). Such calculations require too many fioatlng point operations and too much memory to be performed In a reasonable way on minicomputers, but once they are begun on supercomputers they open up several new lines of thinking. [Pg.5]

Several studies were performed on the optimization of expression levels of ELP proteins in E. coli. In a recent example, the expression protocol was optimized for an ELP fusion with green fluorescent protein (GFP). This fusion protein was expressed and purified in a yield of 1.6 g/L of bacterial culture, which finally yielded 400 mg GFP/L bacterial culture. This extremely high yield was found after uninduced expression in nutrient-rich medium supplemented with phosphate, glycerol and certain amino acids, such as proline and alanine [234]. The influence of fusion order was also examined and it was found that positioning the ELP at the C-terminus of target protein resulted in significantly higher expression levels [35]. [Pg.80]

Zeolites form a class with tremendous variety. Besides the microporous solids described in the above, mesoporous materials have been synthesized. A breakthrough were the MCM-41 mesoporous zeolites with pores of typically 3 nm. Later, many related materials have been reported allowing fine-tuning of pore sizes. A recent example is the synthesis of materials with pores in the lOnm range with satisfactory uniformity and stability (Sun etai, 2001). [Pg.79]
