A Number of Case Studies

Following are a number of case studies examined in the light of the previous discussion. The reader is encouraged to read the original articles to become familiar with the mode of data processing and interpretation presented by

In this section, a number of case studies (Table 5) in which different types of VS methods are combined into a hybrid workflow. Often these combine a fast, ligand or pharmacophore-based method with a later docking method. The latter is useful at the inspection stage as it allows the molecule to be reviewed within the context of the protein binding site. A poor binding pose can be an indicator of a poor fit. Furthermore, possible interactions outside the scope of the molecules used to train the ligand-based method can be identified. 

The present chapter thus provides an overview of the current status of continuum models of solvation. We review available continuum models and computational techniques implementing such models for both electrostatic and non-electrostatic components of the free energy of solvation. We then consider a number of case studies, with particular focus on the prediction of heterocyclic tautomeric equilibria. In the discussion of the latter we center attention on the subtleties of actual chemical systems and some of the dangers of applying continuum models uncritically. We hope the reader will emerge with a balanced appreciation of the power and limitations of these methods. 

Chapter 2 sets the stage with a brief statement of the present use of reference materials by the oceanographic community. A number of case studies have been included both to illustrate the value of such materials and to indicate the potential limitations of reference materials as a cure-all for oceanic measurements. 

A number of case studies have reported on the improvement of existing activated sludge plants in the pulp and paper industries through modifications. Two case studies are presented below. 

A number of case studies and epidemiological studies of occupationally-exposed workers indicate that inhalation of BCME or CME containing BCME is associated with increased risk of lung cancer (Figueroa et al. 1973 Thiess et al. 1973 Sakabe 1973 Albert et al. 1975 Weiss and Boucot 1975 DeFonso and Kelton 1976 Lemen et al. 

The methods described in Sections 3 through 5 have been tested on a number of case studies. This section presents three applications to problems of complexity typically encountered in industrial practice that have been performed using the synthesis schemes, partly in collaboration with industrial partners. 

Hazards of Nitrogen Asphyxiation provides a number of case studies and highlights good safety practices. The bulletin indicates that failure to detect an oxygen-deficient (nitrogen-enriched) atmosphere was a significant factor in case studies. Many of the incidents involved a situation in which personnel were in or around a confined area, such as a rail-car, room, or tank. The safety bulletin includes a chart on the effects of oxygen deficiency on the human body. [7] Several critical points from that chart are shown below ... 

This chapter investigates how intrinsic and extrinsic properties are affected by nanostructuring. Emphasis is on model calculations and analytical approximations, as contrasted to Chapter 2 by Kashyap et al. which focuses on numerical calculations, and Ch. 4 by Schrefl et al., where emphasis is on micromagnetic models and simulations. Section 2 is devoted to static properties, whereas section 3 is concerned with magnetization dynamics. Finally, section 4 presents a number of case studies. 

Lukas Kilcher of the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL in Frick, Switzerland, draws in his contribution on a number of case studies from different tropical and subtropical countries to underline his main hypotheses that organic agriculture is sustainable and diverse, conserves resources, can produce more and distinct quality products and thus generate higher income, also through a shift in partner networks, improved market access and added value.

Based on the half-life and specific activity of commonly occurring isotopes in radioactive waste streams given in Table 17.2, each disposal site or repository of the treated waste has developed waste acceptance criteria (WAC). The WACs require that the treated waste pass certain test criteria, which vary from site to site depending on the nature of the waste stored. In a number of case studies discussed in this chapter, we will use these WACs to demonstrate compliance of the CBPC waste form. 

As discussed in Chapter 1, the full three-dimensional structure of a compound can be optimized with almost any of the quantum computational techniques. Since most quantum chemical computations are still performed on a single molecule in the gas phase, these computed structures can be most readily compared to gas-phase experimental structures. In the following chapters, we will present a number of case studies where computed and experimental geometries are compared. To get a sense of the quality of computed geometries, a few selected cases are discussed next. 

Antibiotics such as pyoluteorin, pyrrolnitrin, phenazine-l-carboxylate, and 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol are produced in the spermosphere and rhizosphere and play an important role in suppression of soil-borne plant pathogens. Suppression in a number of cases studied correlates with the production in the soil of the antibiotics.
