A balanced approach

The energy barrier element has been selected because it represents a systematisation of the classical safety-engineering approach that is still valid and of high significance. 

The formal SHE management element is rooted in the scientific management school as well (Heinrich, 1959). It represents a necessary complement to ensure that the SHE aspects are given adequate attention by management. It involves the use of SHE information systems and different specialised tools for risk identification and assessment.

Too little maintenance results in unexpected failures and consequential major losses of production and/or customers (Figure 7-1). This impractical approach is termed reactive strategy and should be avoided on all important machinery. Optimum maintenance strategy balances reasonable costs with maximum possible availability and reliability. The two main maintenance strategies employed by companies today are labelled predictive strategy and preventive strategy. These are part of a balanced approach as shown in Figure 7-2.

As an example of such a balanced approach. Van Aalsvoort (2000) desaibed a series of lessons which started by asking the students to make applesauce in the classroom from two golden reimets. Then she confronts her students with the question of how a factory can produce sixty cubic meters of applesauce, five days a week. Her students speculate about how to obtain the necessary number of apples, how to peel and to cut them, how to heat the apple pieces, et cetera. They then learn, for instance, that the peels and cores of the apples are not just thrown away but that this by-product is valuable as cattle-fodder. Students not only learn to play their roles as technologists, they also obtain a better view on several aspects of the production of a consumer product, helping them to act as responsible citizens when playing... 

Therefore, there is a need to balance conflicting objectives. Materials management requires that conflicting objectives be balanced. The best approach to materials management (and to most aspects of life) is a balanced approach. 

Nowhere is a balanced approach more important than in inventory management.
