The lignite deposits of North Dakota and Montana extend into Canada as far as Saskatchewan. Canadian deposits are also located in Alberta, Yukon, the Northwest Territories, Ontario, and Manitoba. Production by open-cast mining, ca3.5 x 10 t in 1975, was 10.8 x 10 t in 1989. [Pg.154]

The mink Mustela vision) is a piscivorous mammal that also has been exposed to relatively high dietary levels of methyl mercury in North America in recent times. In a Canadian study, mink trapped in Yukon territory, Ontario, and Nova Scotia were analyzed for levels of mercury and abundance of muscarinic, cholinergic and dopaminergic receptors in the brain (Basu et al. 2005). A correlation was found between total Hg levels and abundance of muscarinic receptors, but a negative correlation was found between total Hg and abundance of dopaminergic receptors. Thus, it was suggested that environmentally relevant concentrations of Hg (much of it in methyl form) may alter neurochemical function. The highest levels of mercury contamination were found in mink from Nova Scotia that had a mean concentration of total Hg of 5.7 pg/g in brain, 90% of which was methyl mercury. [Pg.172]

Diavik Diamond Mine (Northwest Territories, Canada). Data from these active mines are compared to similar data from two closed chrysotile mines at Clinton Creek (Yukon, Canada) and Cassiar (British Columbia, Canada) as reported by Wilson et al. (2006, 2009). [Pg.143]

The regional-based survey pattern of the GSC-determined Hg concentrations (ppb) in stream sediments across Canada is shown in Fig.1. Of particular interest are (i) the high Hg concentration cluster near the central north-eastern border of the Yukon Territory (Survey Zone 3), (ii) the somewhat elevated background levels in the southern portions of the Canadian Shield along the Great Lakes, (iii) the scattered pattern of similar values throughout British Columbia, Labrador and... [Pg.256]

There are no effective boundaries when it comes to pollutants. Studies have shown that toxic insecticides that have been banned in many countries are riding the wind from countries where they remain legal. Compounds such as DDT and toxaphene have been found in remote places like the Yukon and other Arctic regions. [Pg.46]

Figure 11.28 shows the rhenium and osmium isotopic compositions of black shales and sulfide ores from the Yukon Territory (Horan et al., 1994). The black shale and sulfide layers are approximately isochronous. The superimposed reference isochrons bracket the depositional age of the enclosing shales. One reference line represents the minimum age (367 Ma) with an initial ( Os/ Os)q ratio of one, consistent with the mantle isotopic composition at that age (see later). The other reference isochron is drawn for a maximum age of 380 Ma, with ( 870s/ 860s)o = 12 (the maximum value measured in terrigenous sediments). Further examples of application of Re-Os dating of sediments can be found in Ravizza and Turekian (1989). [Pg.763]

The Selwyn Basin in the Yukon Territory of Canada hosts major SEDEX Zn-Pb sulphide deposits, the biggest being the relatively large ( 90.4 Mt) deposits at Howard s Pass Y), owned by Selwyn Resources (Morganti 1979 Goodfellow 2004). This research focuses on the surficial geochemical expression of the XY deposit, one of the 13 known orebodies within the Howards Pass district. [Pg.39]
