The world food situation is well expressed by Dr. Daniel Aldrich Jr. (1965) of the University of California. He states that if this well-fed continent were called to support its people with the tools of a century ago, we could very well rival some of the world s most underdeveloped nations in poverty and human misery. Of course this is an unlikely sort of if. But there are around us the partisans of a chemical-free world who would have us give up some of the principal tools of modern agriculture.

An important problem is the increasing gap between world food re-quirement and world food production. Several reports originating under U. S. or international auspices (6,14, 27, 45) forewarn of Malthusian conditions. Adding to the seriousness of the situation is the fact that the quality of foods for many people is substandard although caloric intake meets minimum standards. Quality is determined by many factors, one of which is the content of protein derived from animals.

The additional and steadily increasing demand for biofuels could lead to a situation where production of biomass derived fuels finally compete with food production. People who can afford cars can pay more for biomass for fuels than people in non-industrialised countries can pay for food production. Fertile soil in non-industrial countries might then be used for energy crops instead of food. This may eventually lead to a situation where only bad soil is left for food crops and the poor, which in addition would eventually also lead to further deforestation of the World s rainforests. 

Most research on aroma recovery by organophilic pervaporation has been conducted using aqueous aroma model solutions [25-28], although in recent years significant interest has been devoted to the recovery of aroma compounds from natural complex streams, such as fruit juices [29-31], food industry effluents [32] and other natural matrixes [33]. The increasing demand for natural aroma compounds for food use, and their market value, opens a world of possibilities for a technique that allows for a benign recovery of these compounds without addition of any chemicals or temperature increase. However, in most situations, dedicated requests by industrialists are formulated in cooperation with marketing departments, which translate into the need for a correct public perception. 

The sale of tryptophan as dietary supplements for man is now illegal. Dietary supplements to animal stock feed is OK. Tryptophan is available to hospitals for use in critical situations. Tryptophan is available as a prescription drug. But it is not available in the health food stores and so cannot be explored by the lay researcher. The world of inquiring into the action on normals, schizophrenics, alcoholics, people who are overweight, people who are depressed, is denied both to the private individual and to the clinical researcher. There are commercially available drugs, all approved, that can play the same role. Within four days of the announced ban of tryptophan (after the problem had been resolved and corrected) a broad promotion of Prozac (an antidepressant similar in action to Tryptophan) appeared in Newsweek (March 26, 1990). Prozac is still widely promoted. Tryptophan is still not available to the private individual. Both can play the role of being an effective sedative. 

GLC is widely used for the study of carbohydrates however, there have been far fewer applications to food chemistry (76). This situation will undoubtedly change as more information regarding the dietary and its impact upon health is requested. HPhe interest in irradiation processing of food is widespread, and the tempo of effort, stimulated by real problems, is increasing. A recent international conference (14) revealed the volume and diversity of work being carried out around the world. The significant aspect which has not received enough attention is the translation of research results to real commercial situations.
