Working at heights

The largest brushes commonly used on industrial steelwork are l(X)mm wide. While their use is slow and laborious on large areas, they are able to reach otherwise inaccessible areas. The painter requires no more than a 51 container of paint to fuel his brush for up to 8 h. This container size can be handled when working at height. The trays and buckets used with rollers are less easily handled. 

Maintenance work is, by its very nature, hazardous. Workers maintain equipment that is opened or disassembled, thereby exposing those workers to a wide range of potential hazards that stem from toxic chemicals, heat, electricity, moving machinery, hydraulics, pneumatic equipment, falling objects, springs and coils, and falls from equipment. In addition, maintenance workers may be asked to work at heights, in confined spaces, or in other unsafe locations. Therefore, first goal of any maintenance procedure is to ensure that the work can be carried out safely.

A permits committee was formed and met regularly to draft critical safety permits. New hot work, confined space, general permit to work, and excavation permits were written, approved, and introduced. A special squad of employees was formed into an at-height rescue team able to rescue someone suspended from a safety harness at height, and they were trained and equipped. A special three-story scaffold was erected as a permanent training structure for the team. This team was formed as a result of anployees concerns when working at heights.

Increased amount of in-shaft work (working at heights)... 

The use of bolted splices was preferred over site welding of main structural elements primarily to avoid the need for excessive working at height, specialist steel preparation, welding, NDT and surface coating processes. This required tight fabrication tolerances on each sphce, to maintain the required shaft centreline dimensions relative to the head sheaves.

Working above ground level creates added dangers and slows down the work rate of the electrician. New Work at Height Regulations came into force on 6 April 2005. Every precaution should be taken to ensure that the working platform is appropriate for the purpose and in good condition. 

The term ladder is generally taken to include stepladders and trestles. The use of ladders for working above ground level is only acceptable for access and work of short duration (Work at Height Regulations 2005).
