Wire grid

Finally, the beam — composed mainly of single substrate and solvent molecules and very small clusters — is passed through a heated wire grid, where the last declustering and desolvation occurs, leaving a beam of substrate molecules. 

Grill not intended to change the direction of air, consisting oi parallel lamina ribs, perforated metal grid, wired grid, etc. 

The experiments described here were performed with a Digilab FTS40 Fourier transform instrument, with a liquid nitrogen-cooled Mercury Cadmium Telluride, (MCT), detector. The instrument is provided with a computer for data acquisition, storage and mathematical treatment. P-polarized incident light was obtained by means of an A1 wire-grid polarizer supported on a BaF2 substrate.

Samples for infra-red absorption measurement were introduced between two rubbed nylon coated calcium fluoride substrates spaced 10 pm apart. To insure proper parallel alignment, samples were cooled at 0.02° C/minute from the isotropic to the Smectic C phase. The alignment was then checked using polarizing microscopy. Polarized IR spectra (32 scans per spectrum) were obtained using an FTIR spectrometer (IFS-66 Bruker, Pillerica, MA) equipped with a wire grid polarizer at a resolution of 2 cm"1. 

Pyrolysis experiments were performed using a heated wire grid technique. Reactor details have been reported previously [7, 8]. The technique has been successfully applied in both pyrolysis and gasification studies [8, 10, 11]. In brief, the mesh or grid is housed in a stainless steel chamber known as the grid reactor (Fig. 8.1). The reactor is 227 mm long and has an inner diameter of 15 mm. The grid (9x4 mm) is constructed of interwoven wires (platinum/rhodium 10%)... 

Infrared spectra were taken with a Michelson-Genzel type FTIR instrument (IR/98, IBM Instruments, Inc.) equipped with a liquid nitrogen cooled HgCdTe detector. The optical attachment arrangement is shown in Fig. 2-14. The infrared radiation was p-polarized using ERS-5 wire grid polarizer. 

An Instron Testing System (Model 1122), fitted with a 10 cm six-wire grid (Ottawa Texture measuring system, OTMS cell) was used to determine rheological properties. A loading rate of 50 mm/min and a chart speed of 500 mm/min resulted in a well defined force-deformation curve. Force at the bioyield point and the area under the curve were calculated. These values were then converted into maximum stress, work and specific work values ... 

In a similar way, Rochon prisms are made of CaF2 or MgF2 for the vacuum ultraviolet, and quartz for the ultraviolet to visible region. For infrared CD, a wire-grid is used as a polarizer.

As is shown in Figure 9.3, a wire grid polarizer will attenuate light polarized parallel to the conducting wires. This is a result of attenuation of the electric field oscillating...
