Emerging chemical knowledge and the development of chemical industry, and particularly the interaction between them, offer rich fields of study for the historian. This is reflected in the contents of the three workshops dealing with the emergence of chemical industry held under the aegis of the European Science Foundation s Evolution of Chemistry in Europe, 1789-1939, programme. The first workshop focused mainly on science for industry, 1789-1850, and the second on the two-way traffic between science and industry, 1850-1914. I feel that my concern goes even further than what Bob has suggested. It isn t simply a matter of incentives to increase control technologies or to give some kind of "brownie points", for that presumably would be another variable that would enter into the picture, but there are surely ways that can be reached through wise planning to reduce the cumulative effect of multiple emitters, for example. As the title indicates, the lecture focused on the mechanical philosophy, by which the Operations of Chymistry are explained. In style and format, this lecture seems to have been intended to fit into Keill s natural philosophy course. Like earlier lecturers on the topic, Keill emphasized the performance of specific chemical operations, rather than using chemistry as a basis for a wider theoretical discussion of the nature of matter. However, he did not place these operations in the usual medical context, but discussed industrial uses.
