Professor Martel s book addresses specifically some of the more technical eispects of the risk assessment process, mainly in the areas of hazard identification, and of the consequence/effect analysis elements, of the overall analysis whilst where appropriate setting these aspects in the wider context. The book brings together a substantial corpus of information, drawn from a number of sources, about the toxic, flammable and explosive properties and effect (ie harm) characteristics of a wide range of chemical substances likely to be found in industry eind in the laboratory, and also addresses a spectrum of dangerous reactions of, or between, such substances which may be encountered. Emerging chemical knowledge and the development of chemical industry, and particularly the interaction between them, offer rich fields of study for the historian. This is reflected in the contents of the three workshops dealing with the emergence of chemical industry held under the aegis of the European Science Foundation s Evolution of Chemistry in Europe, 1789-1939, programme. The first workshop focused mainly on science for industry, 1789-1850, and the second on the two-way traffic between science and industry, 1850-1914. The third workshop, dealing with the period 1900-1939, covers similar issues, but within different, and wider, contexts. 

This flexible and fluid work context is also influenced by other aspects of the industry the motivations behind getting the job done, the people who carry out the work, the way work is allocated and paid for and even the working conditions. Understanding of this wider context provides the groundwork for understandings of how safety itself works on sites, and the contextual influences that have shaped it within this construction site environment. 

Safety on construction sites operates within two distinct contexts. Firstly, the wider processes of the construction industry arguably create an environment in which safety struggles to survive. The constant pressures for production, as time and money are prioritised through the practices of lowest cost tendering and ever-squeezed margins along protracted and convoluted supply chains, are highly influential and can be readily identified as fundamental truths of construction site life. I feel that my concern goes even further than what Bob has suggested. It isn t simply a matter of incentives to increase control technologies or to give some kind of "brownie points", for that presumably would be another variable that would enter into the picture, but there are surely ways that can be reached through wise planning to reduce the cumulative effect of multiple emitters, for example. That would apply more narrowly to industry. It would also apply in a wider context to transportation systems, or to choices on how you heat and place residential settlements. There is a whole array of planning alternatives which I think we ve got to look at with respect to the "Partial Dirty Air Act". 

The dutyholder also needs to have adequate arrangements for retention of corporate memory. Principles for the assessment of a licensee s intelligent customer capability discusses requirements for retention of corporate memory in the context of the nuclear industry, and CHIS7 briefly refers to it in the wider context of organisational change and major accident hazards. 

This section of the book sets the scene of current activity in this specific area and puts it in the context of the wider fuel cell industry. Figure 1.1 shows fuel cell market development to date, with a breakdown of stationary and non-stationary applications, whilst Figure 1.2 breaks the stationary sector down further into regional activity. 

Probably from this period, between about 1704 and 1709, there survives a manuscript fragment of a lecture by Keill on chemistry, titled De operationum chymicarum ratione mechanica. As the title indicates, the lecture focused on the mechanical philosophy, by which the Operations of Chymistry are explained. In style and format, this lecture seems to have been intended to fit into Keill s natural philosophy course. Like earlier lecturers on the topic, Keill emphasized the performance of specific chemical operations, rather than using chemistry as a basis for a wider theoretical discussion of the nature of matter. However, he did not place these operations in the usual medical context, but discussed industrial uses. This lecture therefore represents an attempt to place the teaching of chemistry in a new context.
