The submitter reports that the commercial 95% Sodium Methylate from Mathieson Chemical Corp. is satisfactory, provided that either fresh material or material which has been opened previously only under dry nitrogen is used. The checkers experienced such erratic results with commercial sodium meth-oxide (even previously unopened bottles) that freshly prepared material was used. For this purpose, 37 g. of clean sodium, cut in 1- to 3-g. pieces, was added portionwise to 800 ml. of stirred anhydrous methanol contained in a 2-1. three-necked flask equipped with a condenser. After the sodium had dissolved, the methanol was removed by distillation at reduced pressure, and the residual white sodium methoxide was dried by heating at 150° under aspirator vacuum.

Dover Chemical Corporation produces resinous chlorinated paraffins under a name Chlorez . All Chlorez grades have a physical form of white powder (particles smaller than 50 mesh) with chlorine content around 70%. The manufacturer recommends Chlorez as flame retardants (in a combination with antimony trioxide) and lately as a nonreactive coupling agent under a brand name Doverbond (such as Doverbond DB 4300 or Doverbond 3000). The manufacturer claims that Chlorez in the amount of 10% along with 3% of a lubricant in the WPC shows an effect of a coupling agent and increases the flexural strength and modulus of the product, as well as the UV and moisture resistance (private communication, Dover Chemical Corp.). DB 4300 lists at 1.50/lb [12,13].

Figure 3.1 By using synthesis methods to control properties such as chemical and structural stability and porosity (dark sphere is porous white sphere is not), researchers can custom-make separation media for LC applications. These micrometre-sized spheres were made at Waters Corp.

Agent, was provided by W. Curtis White (Dow Coming Corp., Midland, Mich.). It is a methanolic solution containing 42 wt% of this active ingredient. Beta-lactamase was obtained from Sigma Chemical Co. (St. Louis, Mo.). Other chemicals were of reagent grade and were purchased from various commercial sources.
