Dowtherm Heat-Transfer Fluids. Dow Chemical Co. manufactures a family of heat-transfer fluids to meet differing appHcations. Dow Chemical also markets the Syltherm fluids produced by Dow-Coming Corp. These discoveries were followed by two key publications describiog the work that marked the beginning of the commercial silicone industry (18,19). Production increased rapidly with the need for silicones in World War II. In 1943, the Dow Coming Corp. was formed in Midland, Michigan, as a joint venture between Coming Glass and Dow Chemical. In 1947 GE opened a plant in Waterford, New York, for manufacture of silicones, and in 1949 Union Carbide opened a silicone manufactuong plant in Tonawanda, New York...

Antifoam compounds. Dow-Coming Corp. offers two 100% silicone compounds for nonaqueous foaming systems, A and Q, which are effective in concentrations of 1-50 ppm. and 0.1-150 ppm. Thus one small drop of Q stops foam in a whole gallon of liquid. Antifoam B, C, and H-IO emulsions (pH 6.5, 3.9, and 4.0) contain 10-30% active defoamer and are useful for control of aqueous foaming systems. 

Agent, was provided by W. Curtis White (Dow Coming Corp., Midland, Mich.). It is a methanolic solution containing 42 wt% of this active ingredient. Beta-lactamase was obtained from Sigma Chemical Co. (St. Louis, Mo.). Other chemicals were of reagent grade and were purchased from various commercial sources.
