White Americans

Interethnic variability in RBC TPMT activity has been reported in several populations. RBC TPMT was 29% higher in Saami subjects in Northern Norway compared to white subjects from the same geographic region [41]. African American subjects have 17-33% lower RBC TPMT activity than American white subjects [34, 42]. The TPMT activity in African and white Americans was substantially lower than that reported in 119 Chinese subjects [43]. [Pg.494]

Nonetheless, many African American scientists. Just included, noted a curious pattern over the course of their careers that their work was cited more frequently in European than in American journals. This pattern of particularism was counter to the notion of objectivity. African American scientists were correct to assume that their relatively low rate of citation on one side of the Atlantic was related to their racial status. However, this is not to argue that European scientists were more accepting of African Americans. Rather they seemed to have had fewer ways than did white Americans of discerning race and, therefore, of acting on their prejudices. European scientists did not know the African American scientists personally, nor were they generally aware of predominantly black institutions (Manning, 1983, p. 332). [Pg.8]

Harry Compton Crick, American scientist and Nobelisi (1962), proposed that ihe molecular structure of DNA is composed of deoxyribonucleic acid and proteins lhistones and high-molecular-weight proteins . These researchers proposed that the molecular structure of DNA is a double spiral helical chain. James H. White. American mathematician, shared the 1962 Nobel Prize. [Pg.711]

Liver function abnormalities with Fansidar (pyrimethamine + sulfadoxine) vary from raised serum transaminase activities to more marked disturbances, with jaundice and granulomatous hepatitis. An occasional case of fatal hepatic failure has been reported this was the case in a young white American woman who had taken three doses of Fansidar with chloroquine (SEDA-12,242). Hepatic symptoms may be part of a vasculitis sjmdrome or can be seen in association with skin reactions (SEDA-13, 241). [Pg.2986]

Flynn In my book on Asian Americans, I did a study of Japanese and Chinese children bom in America between 1945 and 1949, plus those who came to America at that time and were educated in America. If they had higher IQs than white Americans it was only marginal. Yet data suggest that a Chinese American kid could spot a white American kid 7 IQ points, and match them for the credentials that got them into university. If you look at the occupational profiles in the cohorts of the 1980 census, you would have sworn that the Chinese kids had a mean IQ of 120 rather than 100. Of course one-third of that was due to the seven points. It meant that the relevant IQ threshold for entry into high-status jobs was 93 for Chinese, as compared to a white threshold of 100. The other 13 points came from... [Pg.219]

An extensive literature documents persistent differences in health outcomes between ethnic minorities and white Americans. These disparities include differences in health care access and utilization as well as health status and outcomes. Wolinsky showed that differences in access and use of health services by various ethnic groups stems in part from their varying cultural traditions. Pharmacists can assist in closing this gap in health outcomes by providing culturally sensitive patient care. Information about patients cultural health care beliefs and practices is essential for devising interven-... [Pg.16]

Unfortunately, most patients have disseminated disease at diagnosis because symptoms are nonspecific and may not be recognized until late in the disease course." Overall 5-year survival is slightly higher for white Americans (44%) as compared with African-Americans (38%). Survival for patients with localized disease is similar for white Americans and African-Americans (93%). Surgery is an integral part of ovarian cancer management. Chemotherapy,... [Pg.2467]

Genetic make-up is certainly a factor that predisposes an individual to cancer - a familial pattern of breast cancer is, for example, well-established. However, an additive and even predominant environmental effect is clearly evident when one studies migrant populations. In Japan, the incidence of stomach cancer is high, probably due to a high consumption of salted fish and pickled foods but the incidence of prostate cancer is low, perhaps because this has an association with the consumption of large amounts of red meat. However, in migrant Japanese communities in the USA, the incidence of these two cancers more closely mirrors that of the native US population, suggesting that the adopted US diet has affected their predisposition to the two cancers. In addition, black Americans have similar incidences of the main cancers to white Americans, but these differ markedly from those seen in black Africans. [Pg.146]
