To remain safe and efficacious on the eye, contact lenses must maintain clear and wetted surfaces, provide an adequate supply of atmospheric oxygen to and adequate expulsion of carbon dioxide from the cornea, allow adequate flow of the eye s tear fluid, and avoid excessive abrasion of the ocular surface or eyeflds, all under a variety of environmental conditions. The clinical performance of a contact lens is controlled by the nature of the lens material the lens design the method and quaUty of manufacture the lens parameters or specifications prescribed by the practitioner and the cleaning, disinfection, and wearing procedures used by the patient. 

Rhodium. Rhodium is the most commonly plated platinum-group metal. In addition to its decorative uses, rhodium has useful properties for engineering appHcations. It has good corrosion resistance, stable electtical contact resistance, wear resistance, heat resistance, and good reflectivity. The use of rhodium for engineering purposes is covered by an ASTM specification (128). Typical formulas are shown in Table 15. The metal content is obtained from prepared solutions available from proptietary plating supply companies. Replenishment is requited because anodes are not soluble. Rhodium for decorative use may be 0.05—0.13 p.m thick for industtial use, it maybe 0.50—5.0 p.m thick. 

Maintenance The only moving parts in spiral concentrators are those in the pumps that supply the feed and recirculate intermediate products. However, there are sometimes minor maintenance problems associated with the spiral trough itself. Some ores contain sharp particles of veiy abrasive minerals. The presence of these minerals in some ore causes rapid formation of deep grooves in the surface of cast-iron spirals. Wear grooves can be patched with a variety of plastic and metallic cements. Most spirals presently in service are made of cast iron with molded and vulcanized liners. These liners have successfully solved most wear problems. 

Some of the disadvantages of the continuous oil-flow coupling are (1) increased cost, (2) requires supply oil and return oil piping, and (3) the entry of foreign solids with the oil will cause accelerated wear. 

If movable stator blades were used, the linkage should be checked for binding and wear. If a clean gas purge was used to keep the linkage clean and dry, the source and supply lines should be inspected to make sure they all work as intended when the compressor is restarted.

In rough environments a filter mat may nor be desirable, due to wear or dust in the supply air. In those cases, perforated sheets are used as a means of creating a piston flow. 

The acceptable operating envelope for centrifugal compressors is very limited. Therefore, care should be taken to minimize any variation in suction supply, back-pressure caused by changes in demand, and frequency of unloading. The operating guidelines provided in the compressor vendor s O M manual should be followed to prevent abnormal operating behavior or premature wear or failure of the system. 

Because reciprocating compressors should be supplied with clean gas, inlet filters are recommended in all applications. They cannot satisfactorily handle liquids entrained in the gas, although vapors are no problem if condensation within the cylinders does not take place. Liquids will destroy the lubrication and cause excessive wear. 

The ocular surface and the tear-secreting glands of the eye are now known to function as an integrated unit. This unit refreshes the tear supply and clears used tears. An autonomic neural reflex loop stimulates secretion of tear fluid and proteins by the lacrimal glands. The sensitivity of the ocular surface decreases as aqueous tear production and tear clearance decreases. This results in a decrease in sensory-stimulated reflex tearing which exacerbates dry eye.29,30 Over time, wearing contact lenses also desensitizes the cornea by constant stimulation.12...
