Flexible metallic media are especially suitable for handling corrosive liquors and for high-temperature filtration. They have good durability and are inert to physical changes. Metallic media are fabricated in the form of screens, wire windings, or woven fabrics of steel, copper, bronze, nickel and different alloys. Perforated sheets and screens are used for coarse separation, as supports for filter cloths or as... 

In rough environments a filter mat may nor be desirable, due to wear or dust in the supply air. In those cases, perforated sheets are used as a means of creating a piston flow. 

Perforated sheets are, however, much more vulnerable to uneven pressure distributions and tilted inflow of air, as illustrated in Fig, 8,26. The supply air entering horizontally alxive the perforated sheet partly maintains its horizontal velocity component when being discharged through the holes in the perforated sheet. Thus, it leaves the perforated sheet at an angle less than 90°. The suction between the small outflowing jets also makes the airflow stick to the perforated sheet and flow along the sheet instead of perpendicular to (t.

As stated previously, packing the chamber with an absorber may broaden the bandwidth, but this lowers efficiency. It may be overcome by using multiple absorbers in the sound path, and placing a perforated sheet some distance away from the rigid outer wall of the enclosure and filling the cavity with absorber can do this. In perforated-sheet disintegration shown in Figure 16.19b, small holes suddenly appear in the sheet as it advances into the atmosphere. They rapidly grow in size(36) until the thickening rims of adjacent holes coalesce to form threads of varying diameter. The threads finally break down into drops.
