Waves dampening

An oral report is simply a conversation—with attention to some constraints imposed by the situation. If, as you are walking down the hall, the boss asks, How s the project coming , your response is basically an oral report. Rather than have, say, a dozen such strolls—to talk with everyone who might have an interest or a stake in your work, it is more practical to talk to all of them at once. So why is this situation so much more fraught with terror than the former It need not be. What is different about it For one, with more people in the room you have to make eye contact with more than one person. Because they are further away from you, you have to speak louder. And since sound waves dampen rather quickly, you need to enunciate clearly so that even the last row will understand you. You also may not know the expectations or biases of all of your listeners, so it is best to err on the side of caution and to dress formally and maybe speak a little more formally than in everyday conversation. And the same holds true for the level of formality and quality of visuals or other materials. But these are all practical accommodations dictated by the situation. [Pg.1854]

If the turn-to-turn voltage, ef, and the front time, so achieved falls within the design parameters, no additional measures would be necessary to further reduce the TRV. However, if It is felt that the dampened voltage, ef, may exceed the required value of r.r.r.v. during operation, a surge capacitor may also be introduced in the circuit as illustrated in Figure 17.23 to reduce the wave front a2 to b2, so that the front time is enhanced to a permissible... [Pg.582]

Note Cable junction b has a high refraction and reflection. Arrester would be essential to protect the cable rather than the transformer, if 2Vi > BIL of the cable. If the cable is long enough say. > 50 metre or so, the natural dampening of Ihe incident wave up to junction b may be enough and may not cause any harmful effect even without the arrester... [Pg.599]

A poorly designed discharge manifold can cause shock waves and excessive pressure peaks. This manifold should be as short and direct as possible, avoiding any sharps turns. The conventional small atmospheric air chamber, often furnished with pumps, supplies only a moderate cushioning effect. For best results, this air chamber should be supplemented by a large atmospheric air chamber or by a precharged pulsation dampener. [Pg.630]

In all cases, to achieve a proper regulation of the flow, a pulsation damper is used. It operates on the principle of a mechanical ballast or can be electronically controlled. The simplest mechanical ballasting device is a coil with a low cross-section, several metres in length, placed between the pump and the injector. Under the influence of a wave of solvent, the tube uncoils slightly which increases its internal volume and dampens the variation in pressure. [Pg.48]

Ability to Propagate Detonation Transmission of Detonation or Extent of Propagation of Explosion. The prop erty of an expl to conduct detonation, which has been started by an initiator, to neighboring layers is depend ent on the props of the expl mainly velocity of deton and on some other factors(such as confinement, thickness of layer, diam of charge, density of packing, and temp) (Ref 1,3,4,5 6)- In some substs(such as AN), the deton wave might easily die out(or dampen) if the optimum conditions for propagation are not fulfilled... [Pg.705]

Trix peered over the balcony wall and started her way down the steps. There was a table set out below, laid with all sorts of inviting colours and tempting smells. A woman, waves of golden chestnut hair dampened and glistening, presumably from a morning swim, was arranging a bowl of perfect fruits amid the bountiful display of foods and refreshments. [Pg.56]

Monolayers can be used to retard evaporation (water reservoirs), a related effect is the use of an oil film to dampen waves (surface viscosity), interfacial films are often the stabilizing agent in emulsions (lower y and increase rjs). [Pg.80]

Pulsation dampeners work by fluid friction, reflexion of pressure waves and volume elasticity. They represent an effective measure of controlling pulsation. [Pg.576]

The invidual components of the piping system like valves, branches, atomizing nozzles etc. are described by resistance coefficients. Furthermore the modeling of gas-charged dampeners and resonators is possible. The software simulates pressure losses in pipeline as well as radially expansion of pipes due to transition of pressure waves. [Pg.578]

Why titanium excels in dampening vibrations is not entirely clear. Despite titanium s significantly lower density than steel s, shock waves travel more slowly in titanium than steel. Whatever the explanation for its shock-absorbing abilities, titanium provides three things that cyclists find crucial light weight, stiffness, and a smooth ride—magic. [Pg.939]

All of the preceding dosimeters for sonochemistry (both chemical and physical) are applicable in, and have been studied under, homogeneous conditions. On the other hand, most of the potential industrial applications of ultrasound concern solid-liquid mixtures. The use of such dosimeters under heterogeneous conditions could lead to some discrepancies, however, since the presence of a suspended solid may result in scattering and dampening of the wave. For this reason the search for accurate dosimeters working under heterogeneous conditions is of considerable interest. [Pg.62]

By the way of contrast, a water surface covered with a freshly spilled crude oil exhibits quite different physicochemical characteristics. No surface tension gradients will be generated by the undulating water surface and thus the Marangoni effect plays no role. On the other hand, the crude oil layer may also dampen short gravity waves due to its relatively high viscosity as compared with a pure water surface. [Pg.28]
