Many of the attributes of solvent-borne epoxy coatings could be carried over to the waterborne epoxy coatings. These same attributes are useful in the application of waterborne epoxies as adhesive systems. They include good adhesion to a variety of substrates such as metals, wood, concrete, glass, ceramics, and many plastics chemical resistance low shrinkage toughness and flexibility and abrasion resistance. [Pg.265]

Waterborne adhesives are preferred because of restrictions on the use of solvents. Low viscosity prepolymers are emulsified in water, followed by chain extension with water-soluble glycols or diamines. PMDI, which has a shelf life of 5-6 h in water, can be used as a cross-linker. Waterborne polyurethane coatings are used for vacuum forming of PVC sheeting to ABS shells in automotive interior door panels, for the lamination of ABS/PVC film to treated polypropylene foam for use in automotive instrument panels, as metal primers for steering wheels, in flexible packaging lamination, as shoe-sole adhesive, and as tie coats for polyurethane-coated fabrics. PMDI is also used as a binder for reconstituted wood products and as a foundry core binder. [Pg.6696]

There are many applications for polymeric waterborne adhesives. These include packaging adhesives, pressure-sensitive tape, coatings for textiles, wood adhesives, and various industrial adhesives and coatings. The potential applications for waterborne epoxy adhesives are more limited due to their lack of tack and pressure-sensitive characteristics and the time it takes for the chemical reaction to complete cure. However, waterborne epoxy systems have found significant markets in niche areas. [Pg.265]

Coatings for buildings are solvent- or waterborne. They include coatings that can protect all materials used in building and construction work (e.g., wood, steel, light metals and alloys, plastics, concrete, plaster) against corrosion and decomposition they can also give a decorative appearance. [Pg.262]
