Solvent eontaining formaldehyde resin paints and laequers have been used extensively in Nordie furniture and wood product industry. In flie early 1980 s, eombined solvent concentration and especially formaldehyde levels often exeeeded the OELs. The OEL violations became rare in the late 1980 s. The recent concentrations of other solvents than ethanol (even its mean eoneentration was only 17 ppm) have been below 10 ppm in Finland. Nowadays, solventless acrylics are mainly used for industrial wood coatings. This substitution has, however, ereated a new occupational health problem. The new products have eaused many eases of dermal sensitization among exposed workers. [Pg.1257]

In coatings, one of the main applications of unsaturated polyester resins is in furniture and wood finishes. They are also used in gel coats for boats and bathroom fixtures. Another important area of application is in automotive fillers and putties. Unsaturated polyesters are also widely used in chemical resistant coatings and linings for chemical and petrochemical storage tanks. [Pg.68]

Cellulose acetate butyrates with high butyryl content and low viscosity are soluble in inexpensive lacquer solvents. They are widely used in lacquers for protective and decorative coatings appHed to automobiles and wood furniture. [Pg.260]

Coatings and Surface Modifications. Probably the one application of photopolymer chemistry that has the most worldwide commercial value in terms of product sales is the use of photopolymer materials for curable coatings. Most of the wood paneling and less expensive furniture manufactured today utilize UV or electron-beam curable materials for decorative finishes (e.g. simulation of wood grain) and protective coatings. In addition, the surfaces of many commercially important materials (e.g. textile fibers and polyester films) are being modified by photopolymer processes. [Pg.10]

Insects also produce polymers. For example, silk is made by a caterpillar called a silkworm. One silkworms cocoon can contain as much as 900 to 3,000 feet (300 to 900 m) of silk thread. An insect called the Laccifer lacca—or just Lac, for short—lives on trees in India and Southeast Asia. The insects drink the sap from the trees they are living on and produce a polymer that is used to make lacquer and shellac. People use these varnishes to coat and protect ships, houses, wood floors, furniture, and other objects made of wood. [Pg.82]
