Water viscosity, liquid

This parameter is important in the prediction of aguifer response to pressure drops in the reservoir. As for liquids in general, water viscosity reduces with increasing temperature. Water viscosity is in the order of 0.5 -1.0 cP, and is usually lower than that of oil. [Pg.116]

Unless specifically identified otherwise, the BHP values read from a manufacturers performance curve represent the power only for handling a fluid of viscosity about the same as water and a specific gravity the same as water, i.e., SpGr = LG. Other noncontact AFM methods have also been used to study the structure of water films and droplets [27,28]. Each has its own merits and will not be discussed in detail here. Often, however, many noncontact methods involve an oscillation of the lever in or out of mechanical resonance, which brings the tip too close to the liquid surface to ensure a truly nonperturbative imaging, at least for low-viscosity liquids. A simple technique developed in 1994 in the authors laboratory not only solves most of these problems but in addition provides new information on surface properties. It has been named scanning polarization force microscopy (SPFM) [29-31]. SPFM not only provides the topographic stracture, but allows also the study of local dielectric properties and even molecular orientation of the liquid. All glass capillary viscometers should be calibrated carefully (21). The standard method is to determine the efflux time of distilled water at 20°C. Unfortunately, because of its low viscosity, water can be used only to standardize small capillary instruments. However, a calibrated viscometer can be used to determine the viscosity of a higher viscosity liquid, such as a mineral oil. This oil can then be used to calibrate a viscometer with a larger capillary. Another method is to calibrate directly with two or more certified standard oils differing in viscosity by a factor of approximately five. Such oils are useful for calibrating virtually all types of viscometers. Because viscosity is temperature-dependent, particularly in the case of standard oils, temperature control must be extremely good for accurate calibration. [Pg.181]

An important application is for filament-wound glass-reinforced pipe used in oil fields, chemical plants, water distribution, and as electrical conduits. Low viscosity liquid systems having good mechanical properties (elongation at break) when cured are preferred. These are usually cured with liquid anhydride or aromatic-amine hardeners. Using water, the heat transfer coefficient on the 50-cm-diameter disc regularly exhibited a minimum value at a radius of about 17 cm. The somewhat hydrophobic ZnSe surface of the IRE can be considered a reasonable model of the polyester fabric surface.
