Source water quality has a key influence on the suitability of using seawater desalination for industrial water supply. The water quality parameters that have a significant impact on the desalination system design, operations, and cost of water production are the concentration of TDS, chlorides, turbidity, silt density index (SDl), organic content, nutrients, algae, bacteria, temperature, boron, sUica, barium, calcium, and magnesium. 

The cost of transportation has an important effect on the marketabiUty of chemicals. For that reason, transportation, along with numerous other factors, is often a significant consideration in determining the location of chemical production faciUties. In addition, convenient and economical access to water and rail transportation and the interstate highway system, as well as proximity to raw materials and markets, may influence the choice of warehouse and terminal sites for storage and redistribution of chemical products (see Plant location). 

Bulk Containers These containers may be either open or closed. Generally, it is the effect of the weather on the product that governs the choice. High-value materials, such as certain ores, may be pped in open containers, while relatively low-cost items, such as portland cement, require closed containers. Further influencing the choice of bulk containers is whether dehveries are made by truck, railroad, or water. 

This subject effects designers since many products have the requirement by regulations or otherwise to use recycled plastics. Different methods are used to recycle materials to provide plastics with a continuing life. Method used is influenced by factors such as costs, quantity involved, weight involved, size and shape, complexity of mixed types of plastics, extended of contamination such as metallic particles, continued availability of material, etc. (Recognize that they can also be used as energy sources through incineration that can be combined with production of electricity and/or hot water for example). 

One of the most important electrolytic processes is the extraction of aluminum from an ore called bauxite. This ore is mainly composed of hydrated aluminum oxide, AI2O3 XH2O. (The x in the formula indicates that the number of water molecules per formula unit is variable.) In industry, the scale of production of metals is huge. The electrolytic production of aluminum is over two million tonnes per year in Canada alone. As you know from Faraday s law, the amount of a metal produced by electrolysis is directly proportional to the quantity of electricity used. Therefore, the industrial extraction of aluminum and other metals by electrolysis requires vast quantities of electricity. The availability and cost of electricity greatly influence the location of industrial plants.
