Waste process design

Since process design starts with the reactor, the first decisions are those which lead to the choice of reactor. These decisions are among the most important in the whole design. Good reactor performance is of paramount importance in determining the economic viability of the overall design and fundamentally important to the environmental impact of the process. In addition to the desired products, reactors produce unwanted byproducts. These unwanted byproducts create environmental problems. As we shall discuss later in Chap. 10, the best solution to environmental problems is not elaborate treatment methods but not to produce waste in the first place. [Pg.15]

To the process designer, life-cycle analysis is useful because focusing exclusively on waste minimization at some point in the life cycle sometimes creates problems elsewhere in the cycle. The designer can often obtain useful insights by changing the boundaries of the system under consideration so that they are wider than those of the process being designed. [Pg.296]

Hydrothermal Synthesis Systems. Of the unit operations depicted in Figure 1, the pressurized sections from reactor inlet to pressure letdown ate key to hydrothermal process design. In consideration of scale-up of a hydrothermal process for high performance materials, several criteria must be considered. First, the mode of operation, which can be either continuous, semicontinuous, or batch, must be determined. Boilers may be direct fired or indirect fired. Energy supply designs account for various combustion methods using fossil fuels, municipal waste, process residues, waste heat, and by-products. In the feed pretreatment section oil and water are removed from the recovered or converted CCI2F2. Waste-derived fuels from refining processes Fuels produced by refining oil-bearing hazardous wastes with normal process streams at petroleum refining facilities are exempt if such wastes resulted from normal petroleum refining, production, and transportation practices. For these wastes to be considered as refined, they must be inserted into a part of the process designed to remove contaminants. This would typically mean insertion prior to distillation. [Pg.441]

Optimization problems in process design are usually concerned with maximizing or minimizing an objective function. The objective function might typically be to maximize economic potential or minimize cost. For example, consider the recovery of heat from a hot waste stream. A heat exchanger could be installed to recover the waste heat. The heat recovery is illustrated in Figure 3.1a as a plot of temperature versus enthalpy.
